Northern Durham House seat has three Democrats in race

Democratic nomination for state House District 55 became a three-way race today, when incumbent W.A. "Winkie" Wilkins of Roxboro filed for re-election to a fourth term.

District 55 covers northern Durham and Person counties.

Two Durham residents had already filed to challenge Wilkins: Durham NAACP president Fred Foster, who ran unsuccessfully for the county board of commissioners in 2008; and R. Miles Standish, who ran unsuccessfully for the county board in 1996.

Durham legislators talk legislation Wednesday

The Durham People's Alliance is holding a public forum for Durham County legislators Wednesday night.

State Sen. Floyd McKissick and Reps. Larry Hall, Paul Leubke and Winkie Wilkins have confirmed they expect to be on hand to talk and take questions on the just-past General Assembly session and whatever legislative issues the audience has on its mind.

The forum runs 7-9 at the Stanford L. Warren branch library, 1201 Fayetteville St.

The Durham City Council voted in May to oppose a Rougemont referendum.

Bull City wants no Rougemont rival

The Bull City went on the record Thursday — Durham County ain't big enough for Durham and Rougemont both.

In particular, the City Council voted to tell the county's legislative delegation it's against the Incorporate Rougemont bill that is — again — before the General Assembly.
