Clayton 21, West Johnston 7

In a Greater Neuse River conference showdown between cross-town rivals, Clayton relied on a strong running game to control the time of possession to pound out a 21-7 win over West Johnston.

Montrelle Sanders rushed for 92 yards on 17 carries including two touchdowns to lead a Comet ground attack that muscled its way for 209 yards.

Millbrook 23, Sanderson 14

RALEIGH – In a game marred with penalties and poor play, one play worked to perfection.

With the Millbrook Wildcats leading 20-14 against the Sanderson Spartans, Millbrook faced a 4th-and-6 on the Sanderson 31 yard line. It was an obvious decision for Wildcats coach Clarence Inscore to go to running back Keith Marshall on the big play.

“There was no doubt. I had confidence in our offense that we could pick it up,” said Inscore.

With 4:30 left in the game, Marshall got the handoff and ran to the outside. He picked up 14 yards, and the Wildcats ran three minutes off the clock before Jonathan Bowman kicked a 21 yard field goal to ice the game.

Durham Jordan 36, East Chapel Hill 7

Durham Jordan has a chip on its shoulders. With their crosstown rival, Durham Hillside, getting most of the media attention, the Falcons feel disrespected.

They took out some of those frustrations on their PAC-Six opponent Friday night with an overwhelming 36-7 win over East Chapel Hill. The win keeps the Falcons (5-1) one game behind the Hornets in the conference.

Cougars volley over pesky Wildcats

WAKE FOREST – After dropping the first two games in Thursday night’s road volleyball match against Wake Forest-Rolesville, Millbrook made a furious rally and looked like it might take the match’s momentum after trimming the deficit to 2-1, but it wasn’t enough, as the Cougars managed to hang on for a 25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20 win over the Wildcats in four games.

It wasn’t easy, though.

Cardinal Gibbons 40, East Chapel Hill 28

Both Cardinal Gibbons and East Chapel Hill starting running backs wear the same numbers. But it was the No. 8 worn by Crusaders RB Tim Buckley that proved to be unstoppable Friday night.

Buckley rushed for 184 yards and four touchdowns in just three quarters of play to lead Cardinal Gibbons to a 40-28 win over the Wildcats. Buckley ran for 133 yards in the first half alone as the Crusaders offensive line pounded ECHHS for 334 on the ground.

Millbrook 31, Knightdale 0

This is the scenario Millbrook’s Keith Marshall loves most about football: When the Wildcats have the large lead at halftime, Marshall knows he’s getting the ball in the second half.

And at this point, coach Clarence Inscore doesn’t have to mention the second-half game plan to Marshall in the locker room. Even if Knightdale knew Millbrook was running on first, second and third down, they still couldn’t stop Marshall, a running back, as he led the way in the Wildcats’ 31-0 win Friday night.

Following their June win on BET's nationally-syndicated program "106 and Park Wild Out Wednesday," the Wildcats cheerleaders from East Chapel Hill High are gearing up for a return visit to the show Aug. 5.

The girls on the team are hoping their formula of "sassy but classy" (not to mention the support of friends and family who can vote on BET's website at home) will help them beat their new competition.

You can watch a clip of their June performance on BET's website here.

The show is scheduled to broadcast live Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. on BET.
