Jay Leno to host White House Correspondents Dinner

I'm getting sleepy just thinking about this.

Jay Leno is headlining this year's White House Correspondents Dinner, where he will efficiently bore (and most importantly, not offend) the 2,600 politicians and celebrities gathered for the annual Nerd Prom.

What's most obvious about this hosting choice is that the White House is playing it S-A-F-E this year. Unlike past hosts Wanda Sykes and Stephen Colbert, Leno is unlikely to cause so much as a ripple with his predictable style of comedy (check out Colbert's infamous 2006 hosting job here). Maybe he'll do a special edition of "Headlines" or "Jay Walking." Yay.

Festivities will air on MSNBC this Saturday night at 9pm.

The dinner raises scholarship money for budding journalists.

What to Watch on Saturday: "Dr. Who" returns with new lead

Dr. Who (9pm, BBC America) - It's the fifth season premiere of the popular U.K. sci-fi show, and Matt Smith (right) replaces David Tennant in the lead role. In the first episode, the 11th Doctor (Smith) must save the world in 20 minutes, even though the TARDIS is wrecked and his sonic screwdriver is disabled. Tune in at 8pm for a special "Ultimate Guide to Dr. Who" and that last sentence might make sense to you.

The Front (9pm, Lifetime) - It's the second part to last week's so-so "Patricia Cornwell's 'At Risk'" Lifetime movie. Adrienne says this one is better. Starring Andie MacDowell, Daniel Sunjata and Diahann Carroll

Strikeforce: Nashville (9pm, CBS) - There's a big Mixed Martial Arts match. I don't get it, but there you go.

The Wanda Sykes Show (11pm, Fox) - Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") and Laila Ali are guests.

Saturday Night Live (11:30pm, NBC) - Tonight's host is Ryan Phillippe, who incidentally co-stars in the new film version of "MacGruber." So it's pretty much a given that we'll be treated (ugh) to at least one MacGruber sketch. Ke$ha is the musical guest.

Wanda Sykes has had "enough" of NC Rep Virginia Foxx

When NC Rep. Virginia Foxx talks about health care, comedian and talk show host Wanda Sykes hears "Enough is enough!"

Foxx got called out on "The Wanda Sykes Show" Saturday night for her comments against health care reform, with Sykes likening Foxx's remarks to made-up movie lines.

Sykes spent nearly her entire monologue on the health care debate, and near the end of the monologue she named a couple of Republicans in Congress who are fighting the legislation. She singled out Rep. Steve King (Iowa) and Rep. Pete Hoekstra (Michigan), and then Foxx.

Sykes quoted Foxx as saying that health care reform is more dangerous than any terrorist, then offered this:

What to Watch on Saturday: January Jones and Black Eyed Peas on SNL

Everything She Ever Wanted (8pm, LMN) - Lifetime Movie Network's adaptation of this Ann Rule book is something else. Adrienne calls it "maybe the best Lifetime Movie ever!" Read her full review and tune in (tonight is part one of two parts). Stars Gina Gershon.

Wanda Sykes Show (11pm, Fox) - As of Friday night, Wanda's website had no info about her guests this week. We're watching anyway and hoping it's better than last week's spotty debut.

Saturday Night Live (11:30pm, NBC) - Last week's solid show makes me hopeful. Tonight's guest host is January Jones (right), who plays the cold-as-ice Betty Draper on "Mad Men." Musical guest, Black Eyed Peas. Sounds promising. Don't let me down, SNL.

Austin City Limits (12:30, UNC-TV) - Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel perform songs from their 2009 album, "Willie and the Wheel."

TBS' "Lopez Tonight": Not very funny

After my foray through the new late night shows, one thing is pretty clear: it's not as easy as it looks.

I don't mean watching them (although that would apply), I mean hosting them. I should have appreciated Johnny Carson more. Letterman, and yes, even Leno -- you guys rock. Arsenio, kudos.

After having Mo'Nique yell at me for an hour (I've tuned in briefly again and either because of exhaustion or consult, she has gotten quieter) and seeing Wanda Sykes, start out pretty good and only to become an inconsistent muddle, I moved on, with high hopes, to "Lopez Tonight," with standup/actor George Lopez.

I think I laughed once.

The Wanda Sykes Show: Off to a good start

Wanda Sykes launched her late night show last night (Fox, 11 pm) and got down to being Wanda right away.

The show played to her strengths with a lot of stand up, giving plenty of opportunity for her in-your-face riffs, taped skits like she used to do on Chris Rock's HBO show, and most effectively, a Chelsea Lately style roundtable.

What to Watch on Saturday: Stay up late for your TV tonight

The Wanda Sykes Show (11pm, Fox) - Tonight is the debut of Wanda Sykes' new talk show, the first late night network talk show hosted by a woman since the Joan Rivers disaster of '86. Don't expect this one to go down in flames, though. Wanda Sykes is hilarious and it's a smart move to go for Saturday nights. Wanda's show will have an open bar for her guests (which should make things really interesting), and will include sketches, a monologue, and panel discussions about current events. Using Chris Rock's old HBO show as a blueprint, Wanda says she wants her to show to be fun and wants viewers to feel like they're "hanging out at my spot with me and my friends.” Her first guests include Mary Lynn Rajskub, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, and “Amazing Race” host Phil Keoghan. The show will air each Saturday night at 11pm on Fox.

Saturday Night Live (11:30pm, NBC) - SNL returns tonight after a couple of weeks off, and Taylor Swift is the host and musical guest. I'm expecting at least one Kanye West joke. Question is, who can play Kanye? Will they draw some crop circles on Fred Armisen's head and make him try that one too?

What to Watch on Saturday: Wanda Sykes is being herself

The Locator (9pm, We) - Troy Dunn (right) helps a woman find her brother 18 years after he was taken from their abusive family when he was 3 years old.

Making His Band (9pm, MTV) - The finale of Sean Combs' reality competition show finds Wilson's Jamareo Artis with a really good chance of going on tour with Diddy. Check back here tomorrow and we'll let you know how Jamareo did.

Wanda Sykes: Ima Be Me (10pm, HBO) - In her new standup show filmed at the Warner Theater in Washington, DC, Wanda Sykes (left) talks about having a black president, coming out as a lesbian, and 21st century pirates.

Saturday Night Live (11:30, NBC) - Drew Barrymore hosts and Regina Spektor is the musical guest.

Soundstage (1am, UNC-TV) - Following "Austin City Limits" (which has Ben Harper and the Relentless7 at midnight) North Carolina's Chris Daughtry performs with his band, Daughtry, from a show filmed in 2008.

BREAKING NEWS: Wanda Sykes Goes Late Night?

Broadcasting & Cable reports that Fox is talking to Wanda Sykes about doing a late night show on Saturdays, in the vein of what Bill Maher does on HBO. It's attributing the news to "sources with knowledge of the network's plans."

It will air Saturdays at 11 and will be an hour long.

The
network is considering launching the show either this fall or in
January, when the network has historically launched many projects to capitalize on the promotional power of the American Idol audience.

While the network is not bringing back MadTV, the future of Spike Feresten's show is also said to be up in the air.

Fox is limiting its late night presence to Saturday nights, but network execs have said they would like to re-launch a weeknight late night show if the right talent was found. They have also said they like the strategy of cultivating new late night shows on Saturdays.
