What are your thoughts on the potential sale of the chain, which has one of the most coupon-friendly policies among major grocery stores.

Target to price match online competitors, including Amazon

Taking aim at Amazon, Target has announced it will price match the online giant, as well as other online competitors, throughout the year.

The new online price-match guarantee, which Target temporarily offered during the holiday season, went into effect Tuesday, immediately after it was announced by Target corporate officials.

Shoppers will have seven days to find a lower price at Amazon, BestBuy.com, ToysRUs.com, BabiesRUs.com and Walmart.com. The guarantee also extends to Target.com.

Wal-Mart guarantees prices on 3 big Black Friday deals

Here's proof that the Black Friday shopping frenzy is fast approaching.

Wal-Mart "leaked" its own ad early today and upped the ante even further by guaranteeing customers ultra-low "door-buster" prices on three hot items, including the Apple iPad 2.

If shoppers are in a Wal-Mart store and in line for these items between 10 and 11 on Thanksgiving night, Wal-Mart is promising customers these three deals:

  • an Apple iPad 2 (16GB with wi-fi) for $399, plus get a $75 Wal-Mart gift card.

Earn a little extra cash with Jingit

If you shop at Walmart and have a smartphone, you might want to give Jingit a try.

Instead of spending money, you can walk out of the store making money after scanning a few barcodes and taking mini surveys using the Jingit smartphone app.

You won't get rich using Jingit, but it will give you a little cash for extras that don't normally fit in your budget.

Or as Chris Ohlsen, a vice president at Jingit, told me: "You're not going to be paying your mortgage...but a lot of people look at it as fun money."

Jingit has a $15 per week cap on earnings right now, but a quick Internet search showed most Jingit users report earning about $5 per week.

Back-to-school deals (Aug. 26-Sept. 1)

When it comes to school supply deals, don't be a procrastinator. The deals are still plentiful at the office supply stores, but elsewhere the super-low prices are starting to disappear.

In another week or two, all those penny, nickel and quarter deals will all but vanish, though you'll still have a few weeks of clearance at the big-box stores.

Here's the very best of this week's deals:

Back-to-school deals (Aug. 19-25)

As summer winds down, now is the time to buy pens, pencils, computer paper, binders and other items considered school supplies.

If you don't have kids, think about stocking up your home office or buy the ultra cheap deals and donate them to a nearby school or charity.

But do your homework! That includes reading the fine print. Some deals, especially some of those enticing free and penny deals, require a minimum purchase or involve a rebate.

Take a look at the very best of this week's deals:

What to Watch on Friday: Wal-Mart is now producing TV movies

The Jensen Project (8pm, NBC) - Perhaps this should be called the "The Wal-Mart Project." This original family adventure movie was produced and financed by Wal-Mart and Proctor & Gamble, because the companies believe people will buy their products if they see advertising on family-friendly programming. The movie is about two former members of a secret society of genius researchers who embark on a mission with their teen son to thwart a rogue colleague and secure potentially deadly technology. Along the way, family bonds are strengthened. And we're guessing, Wal-Mart rolls back prices on Charmin.

Eureka (9pm, Syfy) - A runaway project named "Tiny" causes a panic in the town during the Founder's Day celebration.

Haven (10pm, Syfy) - As she tries to adapt to her new life in Haven, Audrey joins Nathan in a probe of the destruction of a local bar, which is soon followed by other strange events.

DC Cupcakes (10pm, TLC) - A new unscripted series follows two sisters (alas, without multiples, as far as I can tell) who own a booming cupcake business in Washington, D.C. In the premiere, the sisters build a huge Mardi Gras mask out of 1,000 cupcakes and donate them to a charity fundraiser. In a second episode airing at 10:30, the sisters make a life-size dog out of cupcakes for a local animal shelter fundraiser.

Sam's Club cutting 11,200 jobs

Sam's Club, the warehouse club division of Wal-Mart Stores, is cutting about 11,200 jobs as it outsources its in-store demonstrations.

The cuts represent about 10 percent of the warehouse club operator's 110,000 staffers across its 600 stores. There are 22 across North Carolina, including four in the Triangle in Raleigh, Morrisville and Durham.

Sam's spokeswoman Susan Koehler said none of this region's stores will close but that on average, the number of employees per store that were affected was 15 to 20. Nationwide, the cuts include 10,000 workers, mostly part-timers, who offer food samples and showcase products to customers. The company also eliminated 1,200 workers who recruit new members.

Employees were told the news at mandatory meetings on Sunday morning.

Shopper Events, based in Rogers, Ark., currently works with Wal-Mart's namesake stores on in-store demonstrations. Sam's Club is looking to the company to improve sampling in areas such as electronics, personal wellness products and food items to entice shoppers to spend more.
