Givens, Deacons beat Maryland 31-10

Updated 8:12 p.m.

WINSTON-SALEM -- This started nothing like the greatest day of Wake Forest wide receiver Chris Givens’ college-football career.

Hacking and wheezing constantly, he’d kept his roommate up all night. He awoke with a splitting headache, and by kickoff against Maryland, “I couldn’t run two plays without being out of breath.’’

And yet Givens was the Deacon who sucked all the air out of Maryland. He finished with career-best 191 yards off eight catches, including a 35-yard touchdown in the second half of a 31-10 blowout at BB&T Field.

If you're skillful at identifying odors, check out this cry for help from Fuquay-Varina. Hands down, it wins Craigslist post of the day:

"I am having a weird odor in my home-like musty- mildew/funk smell and don't know what or where it is coming from. It is driving me crazy and I need to pin point it to resolve it- I am ready to pull up all the carpets(it is 10 yrs old) and clorox everything!! I was having some issues with my dryer recently(birds nest in vent) but got it cleared out. Anybody have any idea what I am talking about."

We at Wake Wired aren't sure, but maybe it's time somebody looked in on Grandpa.

WINSTON-SALEM --
Twenty-two seniors, including four-year starting quarterback Riley Skinner, played their final home game at Wake Forest on Saturday.

Now, they have an off week to wait — and wonder "what if?" — before playing their final college contest, period. Florida State's 41-28 victory at BB&T Field officially eliminated the Demon Deacons (4-7, 2-5 ACC) from bowl contention.

Wake Forest 76, Oral Roberts 56

WINSTON-SALEM -- With point guard Ishmael Smith capable of beating everyone in transition and five players 6-feet-9 or taller in the rotation, there was really no question that Wake Forest would be able to score around the rim this season.

But even after beating Oral Roberts 76-56 in their season opener on Friday night, it's still unclear whether the Demon Deacons will be able to consistently make outside shots.
