After Week 1 of the Pick Six Contest, the e-mail inbox was flooded with would-be contestants. That's because Caulton Tudor went 3-3 and I went, ahem, 2-4.

To review, we'll pick six college football games (straight up) each Thursday. If you'd like to be a guest picker, e-mail jp.giglio@newsobserver.com and tell me why. I will arbitrarily pick the picker. If you outpick both Tudor and me, you get to use this space as you wish — plug your web site, tell the world how great your team is, etc. — some restrictions apply.

This week's guest picker is Doug Lynn, who works for N.C. State and is a proud Wolfpacker. He even admits this after the South Carolina game, so he's a true fan.

On with the games:

Unless you’re banking on Miami winning at Florida, which few folks are, what little remains of ACC pride and hope rides with Wake Forest in this test against SEC middleweight Ole Miss.

This will probably be one tough Houston Nutt team to crack, too. The Rebels piled up 41 points on a decent Memphis defense last week Quarterback Shay Hodge and running back Dexter McCluster had the kind of production long associated with Nutt’s primary yardage providers at Arkansas.

If the Deacons can’t make it happen, there’s a strong chance next week’s national polls will be completely void of an ACC influence. Something somewhere is bound to go right for the ACC. Wake, 30-24.

The best thing about the preseason poll is it can be changed. When I'm wrong, I have no problem admitting it and making the necessary adjustments.

Virginia Tech, Michigan State and Washington (ouch!) are gone. East Carolina (21), Oregon (22) and Wake Forest (24) are in.

WINSTON-SALEM – Wake Forest is ranked No. 20 in the Associated Press top 25 poll headed into Saturday's game against Ole Miss.

The Demon Deacons are the sole ACC team in this week's poll. Clemson and Virginia Tech were ranked in the AP preseason poll, but were not voted in by media members after both teams lost their season-openers.

Wake Forest rolled to a 41-13 victory at Baylor on Thursday night in its season-opener.

Coach Jim Grobe said he was pleased with his team's ability to push aside high expectations from outsiders and start the season strong on the road.

The Deacs amassed 376 yards of offense on 80 plays, while holding the Bears to 250 offensive yards.

The 2008-09 basketball schedule promises to be historic for the ACC with UNC and Tyler Hansbrough chasing Duke for both team and individual honors in the record books.

UNC, who will almost certainly open the season ranked No. 1 in the country, has all the parts — five returning starters and three new McDonald's All-Americans — to match Duke's perfect 19-0 ACC season from 1998-99.

WINSTON-SALEM — Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe said the first college football game of the season is a nightmare, especially in someone else's home stadium.

The Demon Deacons travel to Baylor for their season-opener and first of five road games this season. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. Thursday (FSN.

The No. 23 Deacs travel to Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco, Texas holding an AP preseason ranking for the first time in school history.

The ACC released the basketball schedules this afternoon.
