ACC Women's soccer: Wake Forest defeats North Carolina in shootout

CARY – Entering this week’s ACC women’s soccer tournament, North Carolina had made every final since the league started the event in 1988.

Not this time.

It took a gutsy 1-1 (5-4) shootout victory by Wake Forest at WakeMed Stadium on Friday to snap that 22-year streak.

Keep those running shoes laced up for a busy schedule

The weather is turning colder, but around the Triangle fall - and even winter - will provide great days for running in road races and cross country events.

Two of the Triangle’s bigger events on a very full fall schedule (a list is below) take place over the next two weeks, with the City of Oaks Marathon and Rex Healthcare Half Marathon on Nov. 7 and the Old Reliable Run on Nov. 14.

Nov. 7 also is World Run Day.

Duke tops poll, but isn't unanimous

CHARLOTTE - The media that cover the ACC picked Duke to finish atop the conference, but the vote wasn't unanimous.

Duke received 61 of a possible 62 first-place votes in the annual preseason poll, which was released this afternoon at the ACC's operation basketball event. North Carolina, which was picked third overall in the poll, received the other first-place vote.

It wasn't immediately clear which media member selected the Tar Heels No. 1.

Virginia Tech was picked No. 2, and N.C. State was No. 4.

Harris will make his point for Wake

CHARLOTTE -- Jeff Bzdelik hasn’t been at Wake Forest very long, but he has made one big change to the way the Demon Deacons play already. In addition to abandoning Dino Gaudio’s pack-line defense in favor of a more aggressive, attacking scheme, he has moved sophomore C.J. Harris from shooting guard to point guard in the wake of Ish Smith’s departure.

As a freshman, Harris was one of the ACC’s biggest surprises, averaging 9.9 points in almost 28 minutes per game while giving the Deacons a consistent outside shooting threat. He didn’t have to handle the ball much with Smith on the court, so the new role puts Harris in somewhat uncharted waters.

Ga. Tech escapes with 24-20 win over Wake Forest

Georgia Tech rallied from behind twice in the fourth quarter Saturday night to escape with a 24-20 victory over Wake Forest at BB&T Field.

Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Correy Earls with 15 seconds remaining to cap the Yellow Jackets’ comeback victory.

Wake Forest to meet Notre Dame in football

Wake Forest has agreed to play home and away in football with Notre Dame, according to a Wake Forest news release.

Notre Dame will visit Wake Forest on Nov. 5, 2011. Wake Forest will travel to Notre Dame on Nov. 7, 2015.

The teams previously had agreed to a game at Notre Dame on Nov. 17, 2012. The new, two-game agreement is separate from that previous agreement.

“This is an excellent opportunity for our football program to compete against one of the most-storied football programs in the nation,” Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman said in a statement released by the school. “Notre Dame has long been recognized for its excellence both academically and athletically and we expect that our fans will thoroughly enjoy having the Fighting Irish come to BB&T Field.”
