Early '11 hoop thoughts: the good, the bad and the maybe

If these players leave early for the NBA — Wake's Al-Farouq Aminu, Florida State's Solomon Alabi, Georgia Tech's Derrick Favors and Gani Lawal, UNC's Ed Davis and Virginia's Sylven Landesberg — the ACC will break into three categories in 2010-2011:

Good: Duke, FSU, Virginia Tech and UNC
Maybe: Clemson, N.C. State, Maryland and Miami
Bad: Virginia, Wake Forest, Boston College and Georgia Tech

GREENSBORO -- In rapid succession, Duke’s “big three”
triumvirate of Nolan Smith, Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer helped the
top-seeded Blue Devils advance to the ACC semifinals on Friday
afternoon.

Thoughts of an upset had invigorated the Greensboro Coliseum when No. 9
seed Virginia trimmed top-seeded Duke’s 11-point lead to two with 6
minutes, 22 seconds remaining in the second half.

But Smith tipped in a Singler miss, Scheyer cleverly shook free to make
a 12-foot bank shot, and Singler added a putback of his own. The game
was no longer in question, especially with Duke’s defense consistently
denying Virginia good looks at the basket in a 57-46 win.

5 things to watch in ACC quarterfinals

GREENSBORO -- After North Carolina and Wake Forest choked Thursday, N.C. State held on to salvage some of the in-state interest (along with Duke) for the quarterfinal round of the ACC tournament.

Tudor's take: UVa punches ticket to nowhere

The Cavaliers, quickly running out of roster and entering the tournament with an ugly nine-game losing streak, finally got back to .500 (15-15) with a 68-62 win that buys them a ticket to nowhere Friday.

Tony Bennett's ninth-seeded team will have to face top-seeded Duke, thoroughly rested since ruining North Carolina's life last Saturday night in Durham.

GREENSBORO -- Top-seeded Duke’s first opponent in the ACC
tournament will be No. 8 seed Virginia, which overcame dire
circumstances to defeat ninth-seeded Boston College 68-62 in a
first-round game this afternoon at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Sophomore guard Sammy Zeglinski scored a season-high 21 points, as the
Cavaliers overcame a depleted backcourt to oust the Eagles, who had won
at least one ACC tournament game for four straight years. Jeff Jones
added 14 points for Virginia.
