Brothers Shawn and Jin Chang have opened Sushi Lulu (3607-117 Falls River Ave.; 919-747-9720; sushilulu.com) in The Shoppes at Bedford. The Changs come to the Triangle from Greensboro, where they owned Sushi Republic.
Their new venture is an izakaya-style restaurant, which Shawn Changs describes as “Japanese tapas.” That translates to a list of nearly three dozen shareable small plate options ranging from green bean tempura to grilled yellowtail cheek with ponzu to soy-marinated, deep-fried chicken karaage.
Sushi Lulu (“we chose the name just because it sounds cool”) also offers a sushi menu, including a few distinctive specialty rolls such as the Black Tiger (shrimp tempura, cucumber and radish sprouts, topped with spicy tuna and garlic chips).
The bar offers an extensive sake selection (another key element of the izakaya tradition) and what is surely the area’s best selection of Japanese beers. Among kanpai-worthy options you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere: Baird Rising Sun Pale, Hitachino Nest White Ale, and the Okinawan Orion Premium Draft.
The Chang brothers also operated a popular food truck in Greensboro called Urban Street Grill, featuring a variety of fare from Korean barbecue tacos to braised pork belly on a green tea-steamed bun.
