Justice Alito at Duke Wednesday

Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito will discuss his career in law, public service, and on the federal bench during an appearance at Duke's law school Wednesday.

Alito's conversation with law school dean David F. Levi is part of the school's "Lives in the Law" series and starts at 12:15 p.m. in room 3041.

Overflow seating will be available in rooms 3037 and 3043.

Lunch will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to high demand, this event is limited to members of the Duke Law School community. The conversation will be webcast live and streamed on Duke University's channel.

Prior to taking his seat on the Supreme Court on Jan. 31, 2006, Alito served as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit for 15 years. A native of Trenton, New Jersey, he was an assistant U.S. attorney for the district of New Jersey, 1977–1981, and served as the U.S attorney in that district from 1987-1990. He was deputy assistant attorney general in the U.S. Department of Justice from 1985-1987, and assistant to the U.S. solicitor general in the U.S. Department of Justice from 1981-1985.

For the second consecutive year, Alito is teaching a weeklong seminar to upper-year students at Duke Law School, titled Current Issues in Constitutional Interpretation.

Justice Roberts at NCCU today

Big day today over at N.C. Central University's law school.

John G. Roberts Jr., Chief Justice of the United States, is on campus to preside over a moot court competition. It's a quiet, tightly-controlled affair blacked out to all media aside from one reporter for the school newspaper.

The competition was held this morning, and as it was going on, all was quiet outside the law school building. Two NCCU cops on segways tooled around outside the building, chatting at times with a gentleman in a dark suit with an earpiece.

Roberts' presence at NCCU is a coup for this relatively small law school. Read more about Roberts' visit here and check back to this blog later for more on the big day.

Justice Roberts to NCCU this week

John Roberts, Chief Justice of the United States, is coming to N.C. Central University's law school Tuesday, the happy result of a gutty moment by the law school's dean, Raymond Pierce.

A couple years ago, Pierce crossed paths with Roberts at a circuit court function in West Virginia. He introduced himself and asked Roberts to come and speak in Durham.

Roberts told him that while he doesn't give speeches, he'd be happy to come and preside over a moot court competition.

Two years later, here he is. He'll be on campus Tuesday for a tightly-controlled day of activities that you can read more about in Tuesday's News & Observer.

For now, here's an editorial we ran in today's paper about the chief justice's visit.

FCC and the F-word

Based FCC rules regarding the broadcast of profane language, UNC coach Roy Williams' timing was inadvertently impeccable. Meanwhile, Fox television stations and the FCC are awaiting a U.S. Supreme Court decision on their legal battle over the F-word.
