The late, late show

I'm not feeling a lot of love for the NCAA. The N.C. State game is scheduled to start at 10:17 p.m. Friday night. Which means 10:30. Which means it won't end, probably, until quarter to 1 at the earliest. Maybe 1 a.m. What does the NCAA think it is, Major League Baseball?

Our final edition press normally starts around 11:30 on Friday nights. So we just had a meeting to push back the press time so we can get the N.C. State-Kansas game story in.  Which means the papers might be a little late on Saturday morning, but we think it's worth it.  If UNC, which plays the early game, and State both win on Friday, they face each other on Sunday for the right to go to the Final Four from the Midwest Region.  Which would be incredible.

If that happens, we want to be able to tell people that in the Saturday paper.

I just asked Sports Editor Steve Ruinsky what time the regional final would be on Sunday. He said that the time won't be set until Friday evening/Saturday morning. So I don't know what to tell you about planning your Sunday.

UNC's Marshall fractures wrist in win over Creighton

North Carolina point guard Kendall Marshall fractured his right wrist in the Tar Heels' NCAA tournament victory over Creighton this afternoon. UNC announced the injury following the game.

Marshall's status for the rest of the tournament is unknown, according to a release by the university. More details to follow in update reports this evening.

Carrboro may join voices calling on UNC to cut ties with "Rush Radio"

By Tammy Grubb

The Carrboro Board of Aldermen will consider adding its voice next week to those calling for UNC to cut ties with Triangle radio station WRDU 106.1, which bills itself as “Rush Radio.”

The resolution will be discussed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Limbaugh sparked the controversy March 1 when he called Georgetown University student Sandra Fluke a "slut" and used other misogynistic language after she testified in support of President Barack Obama’s contraceptive health care coverage plan.

At least 10 major advertisers have pulled their support from Limbaugh’s show in response to the comments.

UNC, things have changed

Reporter John Frank was at the meeting of  the House Select Committee on State Assets, which was discussing whether UNC Health Care should own Rex Hospital, among other things. By John's account, it was not a very comfortable meeting for the UNC Health Care brass. Read his Dome post

Recently, reporter Jane Stancill wrote a story talking about how the UNC system had lost a lot of its allies in the legislature. Her story and John's reporting today are connected.

Bullock, McAdoo hope to feed off each other

GREENSBORO – Both Reggie Bullock and James Michael McAdoo are in some ways experiencing the NCAA Tournament for the first time this weekend in Greensboro.

Bullock, a sophomore guard, missed the postseason last year because of a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee. McAdoo, on the other hand, is a freshman.

McAdoo saw extended minutes in last week’s ACC Tournament because of John Henson’s left wrist injury. Now, the two anticipate they will be on the court at the same time in many stretches duringUNC’s second-round game against Vermont tomorrow night.

“This means a lot to me because I just observed last year, and I saw what that team needed,” said Bullock, who is averaging nine points and five rebounds a game. “I’m just trying to be a great defensive player who can make shots coming down the stretch.”

Latest news on UNC penalties

The University of North Carolina’s football team has been banned from competing in the postseason in 2012, the NCAA announced on Monday. The postseason ban is the most significant of the additional penalties the NCAA announced in the wake of a multi-pronged scandal that rocked the UNC football program in 2010.

In addition to the postseason ban, the university will forfeit five football scholarships per season for the next three seasons. Former assistant coach John Blake, a central role in the scandal, has been given a “show-cause” provision for the next three years, essentially banning him from coaching in college during that time period.

The investigation began in June 2010, and the NCAA ruled 12 months later that UNC’s football program had committed nine major violations involving academic fraud, improper benefits and former assistant coach John Blake acting as an agent.

Hi folks. It's a busy Monday. The NCAA ruling on UNC football situation will come down later today, and The N&O will cover the story thoroughly. But for now, let's limit this conversation to basketball. State, UNC and Duke will open NCAA play Friday.

Caulton, normally, I would expect to see a lot of press about Henson's wrist, but no one seems to be saying much about it. (remember Lawson's toe in '09 ???) What is Henson's status?

Well actually I thought there was a lot of attention devoted to the injury. It will be covered as the week goes along too. Roy Williams said Henson could have played Saturday and Sunday but there really was no reason to rush his return.

Hi Caulton - Many sports journalists have mentioned the poor officiating in the tourney. With their silence, the ACC office appears to be content with it. In your opinion, do you think anything will be done? What do you think should be done?

I certainly think there should more in the way of explanations from the league. It's the same throughout sports -- NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, even PGA. There's a gag order complete with heavy fines for anyone publicly criticizing or questioning officials. The ticket buying customers deserve more insight than that.

Caulton Tudor:

I don't think the situation with Kelly is settled yet. It's still early in the week and Duke shouldn't need that much Friday against Lehigh. It'd be nice for him to play enough to get live-game feel back. But Sunday against Notre Dame or Xavier, the Blue Devils would need him. Even so, in Greensboro on familiar turf, Duke should get to Atlanta whether Ryan's back this weekend or not. Don't forget that with a lot going wrong with the offense Saturday, Duke still had a chance to beat Florida State at the end.

But you just cannot erase the fact that FSU lost to Harvard and Princeton. I thought a No. 3 was spot-on. Plus, I think the Noles should have a fairly easy second-round game against Texas or Cincinnati. On paper, neither of those teams have the size and depth to deal with FSU. The big problem this weekend for the Noles could be the Noles. They have to pretend they're still facing UNC and/or Duke.

Big debate between a couple UNC fans and myself (Orange fan)... Does the depth of the Big East (9 teams) show that it's a more powerful conference than the ACC (before realignment)?

Monday March 12, 2012 12:16 Guest

Caulton Tudor:

I think so. I think the Big East has been the best basketball conference overall for the past several years. The ACC has been a 2-car garage. Those 2 are limos, of course. But otherwise, the ACC hasn't had a lot pop in the middle of the standings.

Michigan State's offense can be iffy. If you lose 42-41 to Illinois, there's an obvious downside. Syracuse - like UNC - sometimes has trouble guarding the 3-point arc. Kentucky has the best talent, but John Calipari still hasn't won one anyway. If Duke had won the ACC Tournament, I think the Blue Devils would have been the fourth No. 1 -- over Michigan State.

Not really. I think FSU has as many tools as any of the No. 2 seeds, and more than the other No. 3s. But this is a team that seems to lose its focus unless the opponent is UNC or Duke. I think the Noles should win two games for sure.

It would be a lot like a road game even in St. Louis. But if UNC has Henson back in decent health, the Heels probably would be a 1-to-3 point favorite. A big key for UNC is Harrison Barnes. He was all that on-target in ACC Tourney. He got most of his points on follow shots and free throws. I don't think he's banged up or leg weary, he's just not been very effective with the ball.

Jalen's question got me thinking...has a team ever turned down an NCAA tourney bid in order to play in the NIT? If you are 16 seed, wouldn't you rather have a chance to hang an NIT banner rather than get blown out by a #1 seed?

Marquette turned down the NCAA a couple of times in the early 1970s. Al McGuire hated the selection committee. But then in '77, he took the NCAA bid and beat UNC in the title game in Atlanta.

There's an officiating committee. There is no juror ejection process, though. The NCAA supposedly reviews the officials throughout the year in an effort to get the very best for the tournament.

I have to think all of the UNC guys will go -- Barnes, Marshall and Henson. I do think that if Henson decides to return, Marshall would consider it too. If Heels win the NCAA, though, I think they'll all go. With Duke, the only question in my opinion is Rivers. I'm beginning to think he'll come back for one more year. Mason Plumlee, I think, will come back. He could slip into the 2nd round if a lot of big guys from overseas enter the pool. CJ Leslie, I think, will leave at State. That said, he's really enjoyed working with Gottfried's staff, so it's not a cold lock he'll leave.

Roger Ayers will be there. Probably Les Jones, Tum Nestor. The big question now is Brian Dorsey. He obviously had a bad performance Saturday in the State-Carolina game. Karl Hess will be included. I don't think he's confident handling the ball in perimeter traffic. He gets stripped of possession and/or disrupted a lot more than I thought would be the case after two seasons. He'll probably be better in the NBA, where hand-checking is basically outlawed.

Monday March 12, 2012 12:51 Guest
12:54
Caulton Tudor:

Swofford didn't bring those schools in. The 12 current ACC schools made that decision based on advice primarily from ESPN. The motivation behind expansion and realignment has very little to do with anything except a desire to annex cable TV systems in the largest possible cable TV markets. That's why the ACC probably will go 16, then 18. It's dumb through and through, but it does bring in more TV loot to the schools -- for now. Eventually, it'll collapse from within.

As Florida State proved this year, the ACC is an extremely weak conference, which only helped to inflated the gaudy records of UNC and Duke. Based on previous reputation, Duke and UNC received favorable seeds over deserving teams, such as Missouri, Kansas, Ohio State, and Marquette. Do you understand that UNC and Duke's previous history has allowed them to be given a more favorable seed every year?

Monday March 12, 2012 12:57 Jalen R.

Caulton Tudor:

There's probably something to that, based on the ACC's lack of depth the past few years. But at the same time, Duke and UNC generally have played aggressive non-ACC schedules. Most of the other so-called "major" conferences have slipped.

UNC appeared to have found good chemistry prior to losing Henson in the ACC Tourney. Additional experience for other guys, notably McAdoo and Watts could give added confidence and depth headed into the NCAA Tournament. On the other hand, it could be disruptive if McAdoo along with the usual suspects are thinking too much about draft stock. Do you see any potential chemistry issues, especially now that Marshall is not giving up his own shots to spread around as much?

Monday March 12, 2012 1:01 frank
1:03
Caulton Tudor:

No. I think UNC's chemistry is fine. The ACC tourney gave Hairston and McAdoo a glimpse of what's ahead. The big UNC question -- to me -- goes back to Barnes. If he has a big NCAA tournament, I think the Heels will get to the Final Four as long as Henson is in acceptable health. He doesn't have to play 35 minutes, but Henson's defense is important against big front lines.

I think CJ Leslie is good enough to carry State very far...He just seems on the brink of becoming a superstar now that he is finally buying into what the coaches have been teaching. Do you think he is capable of getting State to the Elite Eight?

Monday March 12, 2012 1:04 Greg
1:07
Caulton Tudor:

I still think State's big question is the 7-man rotation, because Leslie and Howell simply get into foul trouble. And Saturday, C.J. Williams got into early foul trouble against UNC. Leslie is playing lights out, no question. If State could ever get to the second half with no more than two fouls on each of the starters, the ceiling would be much higher. But the most unpredictable thing in basketball (other than injuries) are fouls.
Thanks for the questions from all. Our time is up and it's going to be a hectic day and a hectic week. We'll do this again soon. So long for now.
