ST. LOUIS — The image I’ll remember most from North Carolina’s 80-67 loss against Kansas on Sunday in the NCAA tournament Midwest regional final didn’t happen on the court. It came instead afterward, in the Tar Heels’ locker room. It was Harrison Barnes, sitting motionless in front his locker, his head under a blue towel.

The scenes inside UNC’s locker room were what you would expect, mostly. It was quiet when reporters filed in. The players were spread about, sitting silent. Most stared at the ground. Most had red eyes. None of this was unexpected. Nor was it to see Barnes in front his locker, hunched over in a chair with that towel draped over him.

ST. LOUIS — A season that began with so many hopes and expectations ended amid quiet tears here on Sunday. There will be no Final Four, no national championship for North Carolina, which suffered an 80-67 defeat against Kansas at the Edward Jones Dome in the NCAA tournament Midwest regional final.

For 36 minutes, the Tar Heels (32-6) and Jayhawks (31-6) played a tense, back-and-forth game that seemed destined to be decided in the final seconds. But Kansas changed its defense, confused UNC and closed the game on a decisive 12-0 run that sucked all the drama out of a building that thundered with delirious Kansas fans in the final moments.

ST. LOUIS — Kendall Marshall will not play today when North Carolina plays against Kansas in the NCAA tournament Midwest regional final. Marshall, the sophomore point guard, suffered a broken bone in his right wrist in a victory a week ago against Creighton.

ST. LOUIS — You’ve heard Roy Williams at various points this season describe Stilman White as a guy who’s out there, who’s not of the normal, who’s a bit of a character. Williams, the Tar Heels coach, recently described White as a “wacko.” It was a term of endearment.

White started his first college game on Friday night in place of the injured Kendall Marshall, and when the Tar Heels play against Kansas here on Sunday in the NCAA tournament Midwest regional final, there’s a good chance – a great chance – White will be starting again.

So, naturally, the national media members who have gathered here want to know more about White. About why he’s this guy that Williams likes to rag on. Williams was happy to oblige earlier today.

ST. LOUIS — Kendall Marshall doesn’t know if he might play on Sunday when North Carolina plays Kansas in the NCAA tournament Midwest regional semifinals. Marshall is hopeful, of course, but he said here earlier today that he wouldn’t play if UNC had a game today.

ST. LOUIS — True story: North Carolina coach Roy Williams went out on a walk this morning. This is the kind of thing he normally does. And out somewhere on the streets of St. Louis, a Kansas fan passed by.

While passing Williams, the man said: “Rock Chalk Jayhawk.”

“And you know what I said,” Williams asked here earlier on Thursday. “Go K U.”
