Dan Dakich on Michael Jordan: I beat him like a dog and he owes me money

When Indiana and North Carolina play a basketball game, as they will tonight, you can be sure their 1984 NCAA tournament game will be brought up. If you weren’t around for it, you’ve probably heard about it. It’s the game where Dan Dakich, as the legend goes, shut down Michael Jordan in Jordan’s final collegiate game.

Dakich has become known for a lot of things. He’s a college basketball analyst for ESPN, he hosts a radio show in Indianapolis, he coached at both Bowling Green and Indiana. Still, nearly 30 years later, Dakich is perhaps best known as the guy who defended Jordan during Indiana’s 72-68 victory against the top-ranked Tar Heels in the East regional semifinals of the 1984 NCAA tournament.

SOMEWHERE IN THE AIR — Welcome, folks, to seat 25A on my flight from Raleigh (through Atlanta) to Indianapolis. I’ve become adept at typing like this – scrunched up, elbows stuck to my side – in recent years.

So No. 14 North Carolina plays at No. 1 Indiana tonight.

Before the Tar Heels left town last night, UNC coach Roy Williams met with media members and talked about a variety of topics. I asked him a few questions about Cody Zeller, Indiana’s sophomore forward who entered the season as the overwhelming favorite to win national player of the year honors. And, oh yes, Cody happens to be the younger brother of Tyler Zeller, who a season ago won ACC Player of the Year honors during his final year at UNC.

UNC guard P.J. Hairston to miss game against Indiana

CHAPEL HILL P.J. Hairston, the North Carolina sophomore guard who suffered a knee injury during practice on Sunday, will not play in the Tar Heels’ game at top-ranked Indiana on Tuesday.

Hairston is not traveling with the team to Indiana, and there is no timetable for his return, UNC announced in a statement on Monday night.

CHAPEL HILL P.J. Hairston, the sophomore guard at North Carolina, suffered a knee injury during practice on Sunday and his status for the Tar Heels’ game at No. 1 Indiana is in doubt.

Hairston was diagnosed with a mild sprain of his left knee, UNC basketball team spokesman Steve Kirschner said on Monday. It’s unclear whether Hairston will be able to practice today.

UNC 112, Chaminade 70: The look back

UNC coach Roy Williams was not satisfied with the Tar Heels' third-place finish int he Maui Invitational. ROBERT WILLETT

LAHAINA, Hawaii — And Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Hope it’s memorable and spent with family and friends. North Carolina coach Roy Williams was happy with his team’s performance in its 112-70 victory against Chaminade on Wednesday. But, overall, Williams still left the Lahaina Civic Center with an empty feeling about his team’s experience in the Maui Invitational.

A look back at the Tar Heels’ victory, which gave them third place in the tournament:

UNC routs Chaminade 112-70 for third place in Maui

North Carolina’s 112-70 victory against Chaminade here on Wednesday night left Tar Heels coach Roy Williams with a warmer feeling the one he had experienced on Tuesday, after a disappointing loss against Butler, but he still felt empty about UNC’s overall performance in the Maui Invitational.

LAHAINA, Hawaii — One night after North Carolina’s best performance of the season came its worst. A look back at the Tar Heels’ 82-71 defeat against Butler in the Maui Invitational:

Butler upsets UNC 82-71 in Maui Invitational

LAHAINA, Hawaii — Before his team’s game against Butler here on Tuesday night in the Maui Invitational, Roy Williams went over his talking points, as he usually does, and he specifically instructed the Tar Heels to play hard and play with intelligence. Williams expected Butler to do both.

What he didn’t expect was his team to do neither for long stretches during its 82-71 defeat – one that left Williams so agitated he briefly snapped at a tournament public relations staffer who attempted to fix his microphone during his postgame press conference. Williams apologized for that, but not for the anger and disappointment he directed toward his team, and his own coaching.

“On game nights,” Williams said, “you’ve got to freaking step up and be a man on game night.”

UNC 95, Mississippi State 49: The look back

Dexter Strickland's all-around game was one of many positives  for North Carolina during its 95-49 victory against Mississippi State in Maui on Monday. ROBERT WILLETT

LAHAINA, Hawaii — North Carolina made 15 3-pointers, including a buzzer-beating 75-footer from P.J. Hairston to end the first half and Leslie McDonald had a career-high 21 points. Just what we thought would happen during the Tar Heels first game of the Maui Invitational, right?

Roy Williams on Maryland leaving ACC: If they feel that is best then see you

UNC coach Roy Williams said he was "stunned" and "shocked" by Maryland's decision to leave the ACC and join the Big Ten. ROBERT WILLETT

LAHAINA, Hawaii — North Carolina coach Roy Williams said on Monday that he was “stunned” and “shocked” by the news that Maryland would be leaving the ACC to join the Big Ten.

“I’m an old ACC guy,” Williams said after his team’s 95-49 victory against Mississippi State in the quarterfinals of the Maui Invitational. “I’ve been around a long time. I’ve been around probably longer than the league has, I don’t know. So I was shocked by it and didn’t see it coming whatsoever.”
