Happy Birthday, President Friday

A very happy birthday today to Bill Friday, the longtime former head of the UNC system.

He turns 90 and will be feted at an afternoon open house at the alumni center at UNC-Chapel Hill. Feel free to stop by. It's open to the public.

Friday, who presided over the university system from 1956 to 1986, spoke to us recently about his views on a few key issues of the day.

Have a look.

Jonathan Mooney to speak at UNC

As a child, Jonathan Mooney was labeled "severely learning disabled" thanks to his struggles processing information.

Suffering from dyslexia, he didn't learn to read until he was 12.

But then, something changed. Eventually, he graduated from Brown University with a 4.0 grade point average. By 23, he had co-authored a best-seller.

Mooney, who chronicled his story in "The Short Bus," comes to UNC Chapel Hill next week to talk about his path to success. He'll address issues related to dyslexia and learning and attentional disabilities.

He speaks at UNC's General Alumni Association's Carolina Club Tuesday at 1 p.m. It's free for high school and college students. Here are the details if you'd like to attend.
