UNC's Austin gets No. 99 for all-star game

The official all-star rosters for Saturday’s East vs. West Shrine Game have been released, and No. 99 on the defensive line for the East will be North Carolina’s Marvin Austin.

The 6-foot-3, 310-pound Austin, who wore No. 9 for UNC, did not play a down last season for the 8-5 Tar Heels. He was dismissed from the program after emerging as a key figure in an NCAA investigation relating to improper contacts between UNC players and sports agents.

Austin, who is scheduled to wear a UNC helmet in the game, was among a few players who declined to take the Wonderlic Test this week, according to the National Football Post web site.

Hokies go back to QB system in win

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Kenny Lewis Jr. caught a touchdown pass and ran for a score, and Virginia Tech went back to its two-quarterback system in a 24-7 victory against Furman on Saturday.

Darren Evans scored the third touchdown on a 3-yard run as the Hokies (1-1) made good on their plan to get their running game going. They accumulated 261 yards on the ground, including 112 by quarterback Tyrod Taylor, against the overmatched and outclassed Paladins (1-1).

Taylor decision red flag for UNC

Frank Beamer's decision not to redshirt Tyrod Taylor is a good news/bad news situation for North Carolina -- and by extension, the rest of the ACC, but it's Carolina that is impacted the most.

Va. Tech to redshirt Taylor

Virginia Tech's quarterback position belongs to Sean Glennon. The Hokies will redshirt Tyrod Taylor and turn the offense over to Glennon, according to the Roanoke Times.

Glennon, a senior, and Taylor, a sophomore, split snaps in 2007 as the Hokies won the ACC title. The two battled during August practice for the No. 1 job. VT coach Frank Beamer said he preferred to use one quarterback this season.

By sidelining Taylor this season, the Hokies will have three more seasons with the versatile quarterback, starting in 2009.
