Eastern Carolina 3A Conference baseball, softball and girls soccer tournaments begin Tuesday

The Eastern Carolina 3A Conference will begin its baseball, softball and girls soccer conference tournaments all on Tuesday. Play continues through Friday in soccer and next Monday in baseball and softball.

All games will begin at 6 p.m. and be played at the higher seeded school.

Friday's boys NCHSAA sectional finals

Garner will host Millbrook in a clash of Triangle powers on Friday, with the winner advancing to next week's regionals. It's not the only high-powered showdown, as Apex, Clayton and Person travel to some of the state's top teams.

Oxford Webb and Isaiah Hicks play at Fayetteville Westover, while Triton hosts Northeastern Guilford.

All game times are 7 p.m.

South Johnston, Cleveland bow out in ECC soccer tournament semifinals

Triton will play at North Lenoir in the championship match of the Eastern Carolina 3A Conference boys soccer tournament Wednesday at 7. Triton topped regular-season champ South Johnston 2-1 in a semifinal match on Monday.

North Lenoir defeated Cleveland in the other semifinal.

South Johnston will host a first round 3A state playoff match next Tuesday or Wednesday. Cleveland did not advance to the playoffs.

Cleveland upsets C.B. Aycock, advances to ECC soccer tournament semifinals

Cleveland advanced to the Eastern Carolina 3A Conference boys soccer tournament semifinals with a 2-1 win over C.B. Aycock on Saturday. The Rams (3-16-3) will play at North Lenoir (16-2-1) tonight in a semifinal match at 7.

Cleveland, South Johnston advance to Eastern Carolina 3A Conference volleyball semifinals

Cleveland clinched a playoff bid witha  three-set sweep of North Lenoir Monday night in the first round of the Eastern Carolina 3A Conference volleyball tournament. The Rams will advance to the state playoffs in just their second season of competition.

The Rams meet Triton in Erwin tonight at 6 in the league tournament semifinals. South Johnston travels to Pikeville C.B. Aycock in the other league semifinal, also set for a 6 p.m. first serve.

The championship match will be played Wednesday.

Triton is the league's regular-season champion, Aycock finished second, ahead of South Johnston and Cleveland, who also have playoff bids locked up.

Triton is the top seed for the event and the state playoffs.

Coaches pick Triton to win Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference football title

Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference football coaches picked Triton to win the league's football title Tuesday, during the league's annual preseason meeting. The Hawks, who shared the 2010 title with Eastern Wayne, received all six first place votes that they could.

South Johnston High hosting special events at baseball and softball games

South Johnston High School's baseball and softball teams will host special events next week. On Tuesday (March 29), the Trojans will host Triton in baseball and softball for Military Appreciation Day. All military personnel (active and retired) will be admitted free and be recognized for their sacrifices and efforts before each varsity game at 6:30 p.m.
On Wednesday (March 30), the Trojan baseball team will assist South senior student Leah Brown's project to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. South's baseball team will wear special pink jerseys in support of the cause. Game time is also at 7 p.m.

Triton 40, South Johnston 34

ERWIN -- Triton runningback Dedrick Stacker scored the game-winning touchdown with 38 seconds remaining to seal the Hawks' 40-34 win over South Johnston on Friday night.

Stacker's eight-yard reception from quarterback David Smith gave Triton a runner-up finish in the Eastern Carolina 3-A and dropped South Johnston to third place. Eastern Wayne claimed the regular-season title.

Friday Night football updates

Wake Forest-Rolesville tops Leesville Road 20-14 in overtime. Marcus Jones runs six yards for the winning score. Leesville had fumbled on its overtime possession.  Wake Forest, Wakefield and Leesville Road all finish 5-1 in the Cap 8.(FINAL)

No. 1-ranked Durham Hillside defeated Northern Durham 38-6 to finish the regular season 11-0 and claim the Piedmont Athletic 4-A championship. QB Vad Lee rushed for 138 yards and passes for 161. (FINAL)

Panther Creek got a 25-yard field goal from Garrett Lang in the final minutes to defeat Cary 10-7 and clinch the Tri-Nine's No. 1 seed into the playoffs.
