Second annual Triangle Chef Showdown set for Sept. 27

The Chef's Academy in Morrisville is hosting its second annual Triangle Chef Showdown next week to provide 100,000 meals for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

Four chefs will compete in a culinary contest and try to get the public to vote for their dish. Voting costs $1 and the money will be donated to the food bank. The participating chefs include former Top Chef contestant Keith Rhodes of Catch in Wilmington, Scott Schabot of Ruckus in Raleigh and Morrisville, Ryan Payne of the Weathervane in Chapel Hill and John Mannino of Mannino's Italian Bistro in the Virginia Beach area.

The event also includes a silent auction, live music, an open bar and a buffet of student-made appetizers, pastries and desserts. The festivities happen from 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 at the culinary school's campus at 2001 Carrington Mill Blvd. in Morrisville's Perimeter Park.

The event is free but attendees are asked to RSVP online so organizers can anticipate attendance. To do so, go to http://TCA2.pingg.com/TriChefShowdown. The public is also encouraged to bring canned goods to donate to the food bank at the event.

Last year's event raised enough money and collected enough food to provide 85,902 meals.

Updated Again! Harris Teeter Super Doubles freebies and good deals list for Sept. 12-18

Here's an updated list of bargains for Harris Teeter's Super Double coupon promotion, which starts at 7 a.m.Wednesday, Sept. 12, and runs through Sept. 18.

This update includes 11 freebies and dozens of grocery deals for under a dollar, along with a complete list of what coupons to use and where to find them. If it's a printable coupon, you'll find the link to that, too.

In addition to the deals from the sales circular, you'll find numerous unadvertised freebies and deals. Some of them are brand-new sale items not included in the weekly ad, some of them are items that continue to be on sale from last week and others are regularly priced groceries that end up a deal after coupons.

Keep in mind, the list is specifically tailored to Triangle shoppers, using Triangle store prices and coupons readily available here, either through newspaper inserts, magazines or Internet printing. No sense getting frustrated looking for a deal we can't get here!

(For Super Double coupon shopping tips and Harris Teeter's rules during Super Doubles, scroll to the bottom of this post.)

Now on to the deals:

Durham's Hummingbird Bakery to have grand opening Wednesday night

Chef Amy Tornquist is having a grand opening at her new Durham bakery, Hummingbird, from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday. The new bakery is located down the street from her restaurant,  Watts Grocery, at a renovated building at 721 Broad St.

In the email that went out this afternoon, it says, "The bakery will put a sweet spin on Tornquist's ingredient-driven, locally-sourced cuisine. Indulge in treats such as syrups, jams, pickled green tomatoes, homemade marshmallows and ice cream sandwiches. Watts Grocery's wildly popular cocktail, "Watts New," a refreshing blend of house-made hibiscus tea, ginger infused simple syrup, fresh lemon juice and ginger soda, will be available for the first time as a take-home mix."

Beyond the bakery and Watts Grocery, Tornquist also owns Sage & Swift Catering.

Sunday drugstore and Kroger deals are up (Aug. 19-25)

The drugstores are offering some nice bargains this week but the real steals and deals are at Kroger, where milk is $1.99 per gallon, bread and buns are just 88 cents and the list of products under 50 cents is impressive.

Here are a few highlights:

At CVS, Heinz Ketchup is 50 cents, Renuzit air fresheners are 70 cents and Listerine is 99 cents for a 500ml bottle. There are also nice deals on Revlon nail polish and lip colors.

At Rite Aid, stock up on free hand sanitizer, free and cheap pain relievers and 49-cent Hershey's Simple Pleasures. There's also a nice deal on Lysol products that you can combine with a mail-in rebate, a nice M&Ms deal and a discounted gift card deal.

At Walgreens, you can pick up 25-cent Crest toothpaste and Oral B flossers, 40-cent Chex Mix, Dial hand soap for 60 cents and a super deal on Tresemme hair products.

But as I mentioned, the very best deals are at Kroger. On top of the cheap milk and bread, you can pick up free Chex Mix, bottles of Dial hand soap for 18 cents and cheap deals on Fiber One bars, Nabisco Snack Saks, Birds Eye Steamfresh veggies, Hefty Storage Bags, Dannon Oikos Greek yogurt, and the list goes on.

Keep reading for all the best deals and coupon matchups. And PLEASE jump in with the deals you find. Post them in the comments section.
