UNC's Williams still wounded over Wear twins' departure

It's been about seven weeks since UNC coach Roy Williams learned that twin forwards David and Travis Wear were transferring to play basketball closer to their California home.

At his news conference this morning,  it was clear that Williams still hasn't gotten over the surprise decision by the rising sophomores, who will both sit out next season to play at UCLA. In 22 seasons as a head coach at Kansas and North Carolina, Williams said he's not had to deal with too many transfer departures, and he wasn't counting on the Wear twins leaving.

Wear twins now Bruins

Former North Carolina forwards David and Travis Wear have signed written offers of financial aid at UCLA and will attend the school this coming year, Bruins coach Ben Howland announced today.

As per NCAA transfer rules, the sophomores will have to sit out a season.

It's official: Wears will transfer

UNC's news release:

University of North Carolina rising sophomore forwards
David Wear and Travis Wear are transferring, Tar Heel head coach Roy
Williams announced today.

Transfers a rarity for UNC's Williams

Transfers are a rare occurrence for UNC coach Roy Williams.

During his radio show last season, Williams said he's had only a
half-dozen players transfer during his head coaching career (including
Alex Stepheson, who left for Southern California after the 2007-08 season).

Can UNC find replacements for the Wear twins?

With most major big men around the country already signed, the timing’s
pretty bad for North Carolina coach Roy Williams to try to find immediate replacements for David and Travis Wear, who will reportedly transfer.

But scout.com recruiting analyst Dave Telep has one suggestion: Kadeem Jack, a 6-foot-8 power forward from New York’s Rice High.

Report: UNC's Wear twins to transfer

North Carolina's Wear twins, David and Travis, are transferring, according to a report in the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

According the story, the brothers' father said he discussed the decision
with UNC coach Roy Williams on Wednesday night by telephone and that he
hoped his sons would be released from their scholarship agreements with
the school "as early as Thursday."

UNC notes: Ginyard wins hard-headed title

CHAPEL HILL — Talk about a battle of hard heads.

North Carolina got a bit of a scare during its 80-72 win over William and Mary in the first round in the NIT on Tuesday when, with 7:32 left in the first half, teammates Marcus Ginyard and Travis Wear collided -- leaving Wear with a bloody cut about his right eye, and Ginyard woozliy sitting on the court.

"Got hit right in the back -- his right eye to the back-side of my head,'' Ginyard said. "It was just startling. It knocked me down, and then getting up, it was a little fuzzy, and the referee just told me to stay down."

Travis Wear could return for UNC, but brother David likely out

North Carolina coach Roy Williams said today there is a chance that reserve forward Travis Wear will return Wednesday night after missing four games with an ankle sprain.

But now his twin brother, David -- who played only eight minutes during UNC's loss at Boston College on Saturday because of an injured hip -- may be out.

"I don't think we'll have David at all for Wednesday night,'' Williams said. " In fact, they're going to do some tests ... tonight. ... I don't think we'll have David Wednesday unless things really change."

UNC-Tech second thoughts: Where's the desperation?

ATLANTA — With only three ACC victories and their postseason hopes quickly dwindling, you’d think there would be a sense of desperation in North Carolina’s players.

But it sure didn’t look like it during their 68-51 blowout loss at Georgia Tech on Tuesday night – even to coach Roy Williams. Carolina committed 19 turnovers, shot only 32.2 percent, and never posted any sort of comeback to the Yellow Jackets’ 21-4 first-half run.

“I don’t know if it was a desperation game,” Williams said. “You know, I try to play every day in practice, and in every game. I didn’t say in the locker room, ‘Win this, or we’re not going to do that.’ I believe in doing the best you can every day.

“But if I’m desperate, I’m going to dive on the dad-gum floor for the ball. If I’m desperate, I’m not going to turn it over on a handoff. If I’m desperate, I’m going to sprint back. If I’m desperate, I’m going to know who I’m guarding.”

UNC notes: Williams says Haiti comments were misconstrued

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina coach Roy Williams on Thursday issued a statement apologizing for comments he made earlier in the week that compared his disappointment in his struggling team's season to the suffering Haiti.

At the conclusion of his post-game Saturday press conference, he brought up the subject again, chastising the media for misconstruing what he said.
