Eight to join NCHSAA Hall of Fame

Eight more outstanding individuals in the annals of state prep athletics have been selected for induction into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

Rosalie Barden of Wilson, Sheila Boles of Wilmington, Jimmy Fleming of Creedmore, John Frye of Vass, Jerry Johnson of Goldsboro, the late Mike Matheson of Catawba, the late John Morris of High Point, and Tom Suiter of Raleigh have been named as the 26th group of inductees to join the prestigious hall. That brings to 140 the number enshrined.

Farewell to Tom Suiter

Just got word not too long ago that Tom Suiter is retiring as the weeknight sports anchor for WRAL. I just sent along an e-mail to Tom, and I'm sure he'd like to hear from you as well.

Prior to my hiring here, I worked at the WRAL in a number of different capacities: news production assistant, Football Friday assistant, Football Friday web assistant, N.C. State beat writer, HighschoolOT writer. There are a lot of good people there, but it's hard to find anybody nicer, more considerate or likable than Tom.

Who you all have seen on TV for years and years is the same off-camera personality. He's as genuine as they come.

And that's why it's sad to see him go, for all of us. This has been something he's been contemplating for awhile now, however, and it's nice that he will get to spend the holidays without the stresses or worries of work.

He's a good guy to have in your corner if you're a young person venturing out into the media, or for anything else. You're in good hands if Tom has your back, and his name is probably THE most respected in this area when it comes to the sports media.

High school sports, particularly football, have found him invaluable in their corner. Football Friday is a one-of-a-kind production, and the entire operation is ran and overseen by Tom. Often I think we in this part of N.C. have taken Football Friday for granted. Travel anywhere else in this country and you won't find a show like it.

The good news (again, for us) is he's not entirely gone, and will still do Football Friday and the Extra Effort Award. We'll miss him nonetheless.

I can speak for thousands of people - literally thousands - when I say "Thank You Tom Suiter, for all you've done." For high school sports. For football.

And also, for me. Thanks Tom, and best of luck in the future.

WRAL sportscaster legend Tom Suiter is stepping down

WRAL is reporting that longtime sportscaster and local broadcasting legend Tom Suiter is stepping down from the lead sports anchor spot.

Suiter's last telecast will be December 18.

Suiter will continue to host Football Friday, the station's weekly show about local high school football games. He will also continue to oversee the Extra Effort Award, given by WRAL to outstanding local high school athletes.

Suiter has been with WRAL since 1971.

Jeff Gravley will take over at the 6pm newscast.

Here's a nice interview Suiter did last month with Vype.
