New iPhones reported to be unveiled Oct. 4

Apple is said to be planning an event to unveil the Cupertino company's latest mobile products on Tuesday, October 4.

A report from AllThingsD says new CEO Tim Cook will lead the event where Apple will reveal its new iPhone, and likely more than one.

Apple has been rumored to be developing a new iPhone with a substantially different design with a larger screen and more tapered design than the current iPhone 4. There have also been reports of an iPhone 4s, a freshened version of the current iPhone 4, that could launch as a lower priced device. iPod touch fans may also get news.

Without an official word, Apple could still be firming up plans or be waiting for the moment of maximum effect for the announcement.

Along with the buzz surrounding the iOS devices, eyes will be watching Cook's performance during the event.

Apple's new CEO has Triangle ties

A Blue Devil is taking charge at Apple.

Tim Cook, the technology company's new CEO, earned an MBA from Duke University in 1988 and was a Fuqua scholar.

Sports fans take note: The Alabama native also has an engineering degree from Auburn University, and his loyalties reportedly are tied mostly to the Tigers.

Apple announced late Wednesday that Cook, 50, has replaced its iconic CEO Steve Jobs, who has battled health issues for years. Cook became acting CEO in January, and has overseen day-to-day operations since 2007 when he was promoted to chief operating officer.

Cook also has ties to Big Blue. He joined Apple in 1998 from Compaq Computer, but had previously spent 12 years at IBM, mostly at that company's massive campus in Research Triangle Park.
