New Wake County school board member Jim Martin raised more than $37,000 during his successful election bid, despite what it says in his filings.

Martin's year-end campaign report filed Monday shows him with a deficit of $13,443.70. But it looks like the report has a number of errors, including not including the amounts raised and spent in prior reports.

When factoring in the last report filed before the election, it looks like Martin raised $37.076 and spent $30,732.19 in winning the District 5 seat.

Sculptor Thomas Sayre and Durham Public Library Director Skip Auld unveiled this morning a model of the piece of art commissioned for the new branch library at Lowe's Grove.

The yet-unnamed sculpture is an 17-foot tall stack of earth-cast concrete slabs.

Sculptor Thomas Sayre, whose work already graces the N.C. Museum of Art (above) and N.C. School of Science and Mathematics, has won the commission for an outdoor sculpture at Durham's new South Regional Library.

Sayre (right) got the nod from a search committee that put out a call for artists in December. According to a Durham Public Library announcement, he's expected to present concept sketches for his library project by the end of April.

Besides Raleigh and Durham, Sayre's commissions have come from Australia, Thailand, Hong Kong and numerous American cities including San Francisco and Boston.

The library commission is financed by a $100,000 grant from the C.M. Herndon Foundation of Durham. The new South Library is under construction at Alston Avenue and N.C. 55, the former Lowe's Grove School site. Completion is due in 2010.
