Canceled: Goodnight bunnies -- NBC axes 'Playboy Club'

I gave this drama the benefit of the doubt based on a not-terrible pilot, but the episodes that followed were awfully boring. NBC pulled the plug on the low-rated and controversial show today, putting the poor little bunnies -- and a sad Eddie Cibrian -- out of their misery.

NBC will fill the Monday 10 p.m. slot with repeats of the crime drama "Prime Suspect" (which you should watch) until the new Brian Williams show "Rock Center" debuts at the end of this month.

NBC also announced today full season pickups for "Up All Night" (not surprising) and "Whitney" (a little surprising).

What to Watch on Monday: 'House' premiere, more 'Prohibition'

Prohibition (8pm, UNC-TV) - Part 2 of 3 examines the problems that the Volstead Act and prohibition caused, including a possible increase in alcoholism due to women frequenting the illicit speakeasies that replaced male-only saloons; adulterated liquor that poisons some drinkers; and civil rights violations by overzealous federal agents anxious to make arrests. Despite the public's growing opposition to the ban, few politicians dare speak out against it due to the political might of the Anti-Saloon league.

Terra Nova (8pm, Fox) - Jim and Taylor try to save the colony from a legion of pterosaurs. Meanwhile, Elizabeth learns that a former flame is also living in Terra Nova, and Skye tries to help Josh adjust to his new home.

How I Met Your Mother (8pm, CBS) - Robin gets therapy by order of the court when she assaults a woman out to sabotage Barney's relationship, and Ted gets overly involved in Lily's pregnancy.

House (9pm, Fox) - Season 8 opens a year after House drove his car into Cuddy's house, and he's in jail paying for his crime. While there, he tries to diagnose a fellow inmate, which causes problems for a clinic physician (Odette Annable). Meanwhile, when a prison gang leader threatens House, the doctor must seek the assitance of another inmate (Jaleel White). Read more here.

Girl Fight (9pm, Lifetime) - A 16-year-old girl is beaten up by fellow high school students and a tape of the attack soon surfaces on the Internet. Based on a true story and starring Anne Heche and James Tupper.

Introducing Scotty McCreery (9pm, Great American Country) - A half-hour documentary profiling "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery. Much of the footage was filmed in Garner this summer.

Castle (10pm, ABC) - Castle and Beckett learn about life-extension science and how far people will go for the fountains of youth when they investigate a possible homicide in which there's no body.

Playboy Club (10pm, NBC) - A new Bunny is hired at the club, but she has a hidden agenda. Meanwhile, Maureen gets to know John Bianchi.

How I Met Your Mother (8pm, CBS) - The seventh season opens with two new back-to-back episodes. The mystery wedding prompts the friends to reminisce about things. Also, Marshall gets his dream job but is terrified videos from his past will crush his hopes.

The Sing-off (8pm, NBC) - In the Season 3 premiere, 8 a cappella groups perform. Sara Bareilles joins Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman on the judging panel.

Two and a Half Men (9pm, CBS) - In part one of Season 9's two-part opener, Ashton Kutcher joins the cast as brokenhearted billionaire Walden Schmidt. It is widely rumored that tonight's show will also kill off Charlie's Sheen's character.

2 Broke Girls (9:30pm, CBS) - A new series about two struggling waitresses at a Brooklyn diner who are trying to save enough money to open their own cupcake shop. Adrienne has more info.

Roast of Charlie Sheen (10pm, Comedy Central) - After you finish watching the sitcom Sheen was fired from, you can tune in for the star's scathing "salute." Roasters include Jeffrey Ross, Anthony Jeselnik, Steve-O, Harvey Levin, and Mike Tyson.

Castle (10pm, ABC) - Are we really worried that Beckett didn't survive last season's gunshot cliffhanger? No. What we really want to know is if she heard Castle tell her he loves her after she was shot. In addition to the personal drama, there's the hunt for the sniper who tried to kill her. Also, there's a new by-the-book captain in charge (Penny Johnson Jerald, "24"), and she's not too fond of Castle hanging with the cops.

The Playboy Club (10pm, NBC) - A new series set in the legendary Playboy Club in 1960s Chicago. Tonight, high-powered attorney and club key holder (Eddie Cibrian) comes to the aid of a new Bunny after she's assaulted by the leader of a the Bianchi crime family. Worth checking out?

THE NEW FALL SEASON: 'The Playboy Club'

"The Playboy Club"
Monday, 10 p.m. on NBC

Hardcore fans of "Mad Men" will resent Eddie Cibrian for his Don Draper impression in NBC's new 1960s drama. But I don't mind it. "Playboy Club" isn't in the same zip code as "Mad Men" as far as quality, but I do like it more than the other show it's constantly compared to: ABC's own retro offering, "Pan Am" (more on that show later this week).

Cibrian is Nick Dalton, a bigshot attorney in Chicago who spends his free time carousing with bunnies at the legendary Playboy Club. It's 1960s Chicago, so not only are there lots of frolicking Bunnies (and even glimpses of Hef at the Playboy Mansion), but dangerous gangsters also figure prominently in storylines. There's also a little social and political unrest thrown in for good measure. And for  what it's worth, despite the provocative title and subject manner, the vibe in the pilot is pretty innocent, especially by today's standards. There's lots of innuendo, but it's far tamer than many other 10 p.m. dramas. Amber Heard is the other star of the show, playing a new Bunny in town who gets into serious trouble her first night on the job. Dalton comes to her rescue and the two are then bound together by a dangerous secret.
