This is a post by N&O restaurant critic Greg Cox:
You can take that headline literally in the case of Pop Up Ice Cream Parlour (facebook.com/popupicecreamparlour) in downtown Raleigh. The shop’s original location on Wilmington Street is slated to close when the lease expires at the end of August. Happily for those who have gotten hooked on Pop Up’s house-churned frozen confections (with a rotating selection of flavors that might include anything from banana pudding to Escazu chocolate stout), a second - and possibly permanent - location has opened next door to Pie Bird at 616 N. Person Street.
Meanwhile in North Raleigh, newcomer Artylicious Cakes (7440-10 Six Forks Road; 919-649-0780; (artyliciouscakes.com) is living up to its name with eyecatching creations ranging from whimsically decorated birthday cakes to stunning wedding cakes.
In Morrisville, GoodyBox Cupcakes (9573 Chapel Hill Road; goodyboxcupcakes.com) offers a wide range of variations on its namesake specialty, from Banoffee to Cookie Monster, plus daily features such as Thursday’s Lemon Meringue Pie, Gotta Have S’more, and Birthday Cake.
Further afield, The Phoenix Bakery in Pittsboro (84 Hillsboro St.; 919-542-4452; facebook.com/ThePhoenixBakery) has opened just off Courthouse Circle. Offering a wide variety of tempations (classic pound cake, triple chocolate chip brownies, Boston cream-filled donuts and cinnamon buns, to name a few), it’s a good bet that this quaint little shop will be luring folks from all over the Triangle a sweet tooth fix.
