The Office recap: Two bosses better than one?

It's a safe bet that Jim had "dealing with Dwight's inevitable attempts to mount an office mutiny" in the con column for his new role as co-manager of Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch. But it wasn't until Thursday night's episode of "The Office" that he learned of a much bigger con to his new duties: Michael's extreme distaste for using pro-con lists to resolve problems.

Who knew that splitting boss duties between Michael and Jim would create so much strife in Scranton? Other than sarcastic Oscar, of course, who says he can't think of an organization that thrives without two leaders. That's why we have two presidents, right?

The Office recap: Jim wants a promotion

For Office viewers worried that Jim and Pam's wedding and impending parenthood could plunge the show into "Joanie Loves Chachi" lameness, Thursday night's episode offered troubling signs.

Sadly, it appears that the merry prankster of Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch has decided to grow up. Jim wants a promotion. Jim, the same shaggy-haired paper salesman who couldn't deal with the headache of ordering birthday cakes each month for his colleagues, wants to sit in the big boy chair of management.

What happened to the guy who liked nothing more than killing an afternoon inventing imaginary diseases to foil Dwight's plans to revamp the office's health-care plan? Or the guy who took advantage of Michael's absence to launch the inaugural Dunder-Mifflin Olympic Games, awarding gold, bronze, and silver yogurt cup lids in the made-up sport of flunkerton?

What to Watch on Saturday: NFL star searches for his father

The Office and Community (8 & 8:30, NBC) - If you missed the premieres of NBC's big sitcoms on Thursday, you have been granted a second chance to see two of them tonight. Michael Scott begs you to watch.

Georgia O'Keefe (9pm, Lifetime) - A biopic of modern artist Georgia O'Keefe, with terrific acting from Joan Allen, who plays O'Keefe, and Jeremy Irons who stars as her husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz.

The Locator (9pm, We) - NFL football player Paul Spicer's parents split up before he was born. Tonight, Troy Dunn helps him look for his father. If you've never watched "The Locator," read this great article by TV Squad and you'll see why you should give it a shot.

Peter, Paul, and Mary: Carry it On - A Musical Legacy (9pm, UNC-TV) -  The story of Peter, Paul, and Mary with recollections from all three members of the group (Mary Travers passed away earlier this week). Archival footage includes concert and interview segments with a digitally processed soundtrack.

The Office recap: Stanley and Andy outed

After a season spent unraveling office romances, launching and folding rival paper companies and watching Dwight give birth to watermelons, "The Office" returned in its Season Six opener to its comedy core: winding Michael Scott up and letting him wreak havoc in the 9-to-5 lives of Dunder-Mifflin's Scranton drones.

Sure, we all felt Michael's pain when his relationship with soulmate Holly fell apart after her transfer to New Hampshire last season. But it looked like last night's discovery that he was the last one in the office to learn about the budding romance between two of the three summer interns pained him even more.

The man loves his gossip, especially since he has proven time and again that he's the last one to keep a discrete secret, as Stanley was about to find out.

What to Watch on Thursday: Big night of premieres on NBC and Fox

Survivor: Samoa (8pm, CBS) - Hard to believe, but this is the 19th season of "Survivor." Tonight, right after being divided into two tribes but before they are even given a chance to speak to each other, they are charged with electing a chief who will make all their decisions.

Bones (8pm, Fox) - The fifth season premieres with Booth (David Boreanaz) fresh from surgery to remove a brain tumor, but suffering from bouts of amnesia. Angela's psychic, played by Cyndi Lauper, tells them there are bodies buried under a fountain in Washington, D.C., so Booth and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) are back on the job asap.

Fringe (9pm, Fox) - Congress is all up in the Fringe unit's Kool-Aid in tonight's second season premiere. In addition to the scrutiny from congress, Olivia returns to familiar surroundings, but there's a "mysterious entity" tracking her. Olivia also gets to add "super hearing" to her trick bag this season.

SNL, Parks & Recreation, The Office, Community (8pm-10pm, NBC) - Tonight is NBC's big comedy debut night, starting with "SNL Weekend Update" at 8pm. Amy Poehler will join Seth Myers at the Update desk for the first two weeks. Next is the second season premiere of "Parks & Recreation," in which Leslie (Poehler) accidentally tries to "gay marry" two penguins in a publicity stunt. Comedian Louis C.K. joins the cast as a love interest for Leslie. At 9pm, "The Office" season 6 opens with Dunder-Mifflin staffers gossiping about summer interns. Michael (Steve Carell) feels left out so he goes out looking for a rumor to spread. Then at 9:30 it's the premiere of NBC's new sitcom "Community," starring Joel McHale and Chevy Chase. Here's our full review, but in a nutshell: it's funny.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (10pm, FX) - Season 5 opens with Frank, Mac, and Dennis trying their hand at real estate (great timing) and Dee decides to be a surrogate for a rich couple.

Raleigh woman gets a call from Regis Philbin

Arden McFarlane of Raleigh got an early call this morning from Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa, who offered her a chance to win a free trip to Turtle Bay Resort in Hawaii. All she had to do was tell them Rainn Wilson's character's name on "The Office."

Even though I yelled "Dwight! Dwight!" at the TV, McFarlane tossed out a last second guess of "Ed." Unfortunately, she didn't get the trip, but she did get a $500 gift certificate to Crabtree & Evelyn instead. "I'm okay with that," McFarlane told Happiness is a Warm TV this morning.

The Office recap: Cafe Disco

Let's be clear.

The "Happiness ..." brain trust in no way endorses an office dance club for newsroom employees or anyone else left toiling at The News &Observer. And it's unlikely we'd like to spend our espresso breaks dancing with your officemates in an undisclosed cubicle at some other Triangle company either.

But who wouldn't blow off work to rock out at the Cafe Disco at Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch?

The Office: Michael wins

We will miss "Stringer" Charles and his no-nonsense managerial style that cowed Dwight into wearing long-sleeved shirts that were not a shade of mustard brown.

But Michael Scott's return to the Dunder Mifflin fold was inevitable, even if it's hard to believe that he could strong-arm the company into allowing Ryan to return as well. My only remaining question is, who is going to drive around town all the Korean women who keep mistakenly climbing into the Michael Scott Paper Co. van?

The Office recap: Michael is Jerry Maguire

A 'Happiness' contributor who shall remain nameless — she goes by the initials 'Brooke Cain' — keeps making jokes at my expense because I refuse to accept that Michael Scott resigned from Dunder Mifflin last week. Maybe he did tell company CFO David Wallace, "I quit," but I maintain it's funnier if he had said "I acquit," as I clearly heard.

Regardless, it turns out that Michael has indeed given his two-week notice to Charles Miner, his new no-nonsense supervisor from corporate who bears a striking resemblance to the late Stringer Bell. (Obligatory reference to "The Wire" when mentioning actor Idris Elba's appearance on "The Office," check.)

No one batted an eye when Michael decided to turn his final days into a "Scotch-and-Splenda" bender in the Scranton office, but are we really supposed to believe that Pam sees him as her Jerry Maguire savior from the mundane challenge of mastering the new copier?

New receptionist on 'The Office'

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Ellie Kemper has been cast as the new receptionist on The Office!

What does this mean for Jenna Fischer's Pam (left)? With the announced budget cuts at Dunder Mifflin, a promotion there is unlikely. So is Pam pursuing her art career again? Does she quit with Michael to help him discover how high he can fly? As long as she doesn't leave the show, we can deal.

And who is Ellie Kemper (right)? Kemper has worked on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. Check out some of her work here at FunnyorDie.com.
