What to Watch on Thursday: NBC comedies return

Community (8pm, NBC) - NBC comedies are all new tonight (finally), but no "Parks & Recreation" (boo). On "Community," Jeff and Troy protest a chicken finger shortage on campus. On the first episode of "30 Rock," Jack must choose between his two loves, played by Elizabeth Banks and Julianne Moore. In the second episode, Liz discovers that the gang hasn't been including her in after-hours gatherings, and is determined to show her fun side. On "The Office," Michael interferes in Andy's romance with Erin, and Oscar's video pointing out the similarities between Kevin's voice and that of the Cookie Monster goes viral.

The Mentalist (10pm, CBS) - Jane's conduct gets a case kicked out of court, and the gang must start all over in their investigation. This is just the kind of thing the new boss warned him would get Lisbon fired...

Project Runway (10pm, Lifetime) - The winning designer is revealed in tonight's finale.

The Marriage Ref (10pm, NBC) - "Marriage Ref" keeps pulling me in with their steady stream of pretty good panelists, so even though it's not a great show, I always watch. Tonight they have one of my favorites, Adam Carolla, and one of my least-favorites, Donald Trump. There's also Gloria Estefan (meh), so I guess I'm tuning in for Adam.

What to Watch on Thursday: "Mentalist" gets a new boss

The Office (8pm, NBC) - Now I know why "Community" aired their hilarious April Fool's Day episode last week instead of tonight, on April 1: NBC needs for you to have two hours of "Office" repeats. First up, Jim & Pam's wedding, then at 9pm, Jim & Pam have a baby.

Bones (8pm, Fox) - A subway accident reveals the corpse of an author who was embroiled in a love triangle. Meanwhile, Brennan's second book becomes an instant best seller.

Fringe (9pm, Fox) - Walter recalls his experiments in the 1980s as he tries to map out Peter's improbable biography for Olivia. Orla Brady guest stars as Peter's mother.

The Mentalist (9pm, CBS) - The team gets a new boss (Aunjanue Ellis, left, from "True Blood," "Justice," "E-Ring") in the wake of Minnelli's resignation over the Red John bloodath at CBI offices (Gregory Itzin left the show to return to his role as President Charles Logan on "24" -- great job security there, Itzin!).

The Marriage Ref (10pm, NBC) - Doling out advice to troubled married couples tonight: Kirstie Alley, Sheryl Crow, and Jimmy Fallon.

The Office recap: The baby has landed

Let us be among the first to acknowledge any lingering warm and fuzzy feelings from the birth of Pam and Jim's daughter in Thursday night's episode.

Let us also express our happiness that "The Office" writers chose not to take any inspiration from Mork and Mindy's giant egg-shaped delivery of a "baby" Jonathan Winters (the original Benjamin Button) and focused instead on the vagaries of draconian health insurance policies and the challenges of breast feeding.

All that being said, is it too much to ask that Cecelia Marie Halpert disappear now in the manner of most sitcom babies, allowing us to focus on Kevin's quest for a new lunch buddy and Dwight and Angela's efforts to "bang it out"?

What to Watch on Thursday: It's baby time on "The Office"

The Office (9pm, NBC) - The baby! Pam goes into labor at work, Jim freaks out, and they have to rely on Michael to get them to the hospital -- with a red light escort by Dwight, of course. And just the way it happens when someone at your office has a baby, the entire staff stops working to comfort Pam with food and entertainment.

Burn Notice (10pm, USA) - In the third season finale, Michael goes up against a terrorist who is threatening to detonate a bomb in Miami if Michael doesn't cooperate with his plans. To make things even more difficult, the FBI is now following Michael's every move.

Real Housewives of Orange County (10pm, Bravo) - In the season five finale, past and present housewives gather for a party, and what a difference a season makes. This time, Vicki's marriage is on solid ground and Tamra's is falling apart. (One more time: "Tam-RA!")

The Marriage Ref (10pm, NBC) - The only reason to tune in is to see if tonight's show is as awful as Sunday night's sneak preview. I think it will be twice as awful since it's twice as long. If you missed the first mini-episode, here's what happens: comedian Tom Papa shows clips of couples fighting over something stupid and then three celebrities (this week: Tina Fey, Jerry Seinfeld, and Eva Longoria-Parker) crack corny jokes about them, and Tom Papa does a few rehearsed comedy bits. None of this is funny, but there's a laugh track to make up for that. And if that wasn't enough, Natalie Morales (NBC News) and Marv Albert (NBC Sports) pop up now and again, just to make you feel sad for them.

Archer (10pm, FX) - Mallory tells Archer and Lana to steal a princess diamond from ODIN's biggest client in order to embarrass the rival spy agency.

What to Watch on Thursday: "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains" brings back faves

Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains (8pm, CBS) - The show's 20th installment has 20 former castaways on the island of Samoa and divided into groups of Heroes and Villians. Rupert (right) is one of the show's most popular Heroes.

Parks and Recreation (8:30pm, NBC) - Leslie tracks down her mom's old flame, played by John Larroquette, and Andy's band plays at a senior center.

The Office (9pm, NBC) - The CEO of Sabre (Kathy Bates) opposes the idea of two branch  managers, so either Michael or Jim must return to sales.

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC) - You knew last week when they introduced a new handsome black anesthesiologist into the mix that Bailey would end up dating him.

Past Life (9pm, Fox) - This new show (about a psychologist and a cop who help people solve "past-life" mysteries) debuted Tuesday night after "Idol" and there's already a second episode. This is its regular night and time.

What to Watch on Thursday: Kathy Bates buys Dunder-Miflin

Vampire Diaries (8pm, The CW) - Vampire brothers Stefan and Damon recall the events which led to their broken relationship.

The Office (9pm, NBC) - Kathy Bates (left) stars as an eccentric CEO who buys Dunder-Miflin, and Michael has a hard time adjusting to the new company's policies (it's not like he did so well with the old company's policies). I think his best bet is to continue his streak of cougar seductions and romance the CEO.

Fringe (9pm, Fox) - In the winter finale, a strange disaster leaves only one survivor in a Manhattan office building and the team races to Jacksonville, Florida, looking for answers.

30 Rock (9:30pm, NBC) -  SNL alum Jan Hooks (right) guest stars as Jenna's mother, who shows up seeking a reality show deal from Jack. And in a scenario almost too horrific to imagine, Frank moves in with Liz.

Archer (10pm, FX) - Malory's job is in danger after a "sensitive" videotape falls into the wrong hands, and she must rely on Archer's skills of seduction to save it.

Important Things/Sarah Silverman (10pm, Comedy Central) - The second season premiere of "Important Things with Demetri Martin"  is followed by the third season premiere of "The Sarah Silverman Program."

The Office recap: Ricky Gervais was right

This photo of Phyllis (left) from The Office's Dec. 10 Christmas episode is as timely as anything else the "Happiness ..." brain trust could attach to this recap of Thursday night's episode.

That's because, after a six-week hiatus, the show's writers came back with ... a clip show. Six weeks off, and The Office returns with a contrived shell of a story about an investment banker auditing the Scranton branch, giving Toby and other cast members opportunities to flash back to highlights from real episodes.

Anyone who watched Sunday's Golden Globes award ceremony heard host Ricky Gervais declare that the American version of his show has "jumped the shark". He was probably joking. Probably.

At least The Office picked a couple of my favorite episodes to cannibalize for clips.

What to Watch on Thursday: "Deep End" like "Grey's" with lawyers

The Deep End (8pm, ABC) - Consider this new pilot a "Grey's Anatomy" with lawyers. "The Deep End" is about sexy first-year attorneys at a powerful law firm in Los Angeles who are guided by a reluctant mentor. It stars Billy Zane, Matt Long (Jack McCallister on "Jack & Bobby), and Mehcad Brooks (Eggs from "True Blood").

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC) - Izzie returns, hoping to reconcile with Alex, and Derek confronts the chief about his drinking problem.

The Office (9pm, NBC) - A potential buyer shows up at Dunder-Miflin and Michael, Pam, Andy and Dwight join forces to impress him.

The Mentalist (10pm, CBS) - The gang investigates the murder of a mayor's aide. The mayor is played by Sharon Lawrence.

Burn Notice (10pm, USA) - Season three resumes with a "Cagney & Lacey" reunion. Michael asks his mom (Sharon Gless) to help out by getting information from a records clerk played by guest star Tyne Daly. But Madeline befriends the "asset," which causes big problems later on. Also in this episode, Michael's "cover" makes him a competitive driver from North Carolina, which naturally means he wears wife-beaters and dips snuff.

The Office recap: Hurt, petulant Jesus

It's time to stop holding The Office accountable to the lofty standards set in previous seasons, when Jim was a lovesick prankster and not a corporate manager who's discovered hair-care products.

However, even in its weakened state, this show can still deliver some pitch-perfect moments. Thursday's holiday episode was no "Benihana Christmas," but Michael pouting over Phyllis usurping his role as Office Santa, Dwight struggling to assemble the pieces of his secret Santa present, and the entire Scranton branch celebrating loudly while poor David Wallace tells them via speakerphone that their jobs are safe while he's likely going to get laid off, made it worthwhile.

(The less said about the sight of Creed crawling up on Santa Phyllis' lap to whisper his wishes, the better.)

What to Watch on Thursday: A Deschanel duo on "Bones"

Bones (8pm, Fox) - A man dressed like Santa Claus robs a bank and then blows himself up. Merry Christmas!! More importantly, Zooey Deschanel, real life sister of "Bones" star Emily Deschanel (both at left), guest stars.

Community (8pm, NBC) - Anthony Michael Hall is on as a bully hassling Jeff, who happens to be preoccupied about failing Spanish (please let this mean we get Senor Chang tonight).

Parks & Recreation (8:30pm, NBC) - Leslie in the middle of a sex scandal? Sounds just about right.

The Office (9pm, NBC) - Phyllis and Michael battle over who gets to play Santa. Meanwhile, Dunder-Mifflin is sinking like  a stone.

30 Rock (9:30pm, NBC) - Jack reconnects with an old flame (Julianne Moore).

Jersey Shore (10pm, MTV) - It's the new reality show that has Italian Americans up in arms. But I'm not sure if making threats against MTV staff is the most effective way to argue that Italian Americans in New Jersey aren't all just a bunch of guidos. The show is pretty awful and advertisers are already bailing, so if you're curious, you better watch it while you can.
