Discovery Channel's 'Moonshiners' series features familiar face

The Discovery Channel's newest reality show, "Moonshiners," follows small group of Virginia men as they go through the motions of creating a batch of illegal whiskey from start to finish, deep in the Appalachian mountains.

If that sounds a lot like Neal Hutcheson's Emmy-winning documentary "The Last One," chronicling legendary mountain man Popcorn Sutton brewing his supposed last batch of moonshine, then it shouldn't surprise you to see clips from that film sprinkled throughout the first few episodes of the Discovery series.

Hutcheson, a documentary filmmaker at N.C. State, says that some of the film has been licensed to Discovery for use in the series. "Tim," the main character in "Moonshiners," references Popcorn and insinuates that his father perhaps worked with him, but his statements are vague on that point.

Popcorn Sutton film featured at Chatham Arts event tonight

"The Last One," Neal Hutcheson's Emmy-winning documentary on Popcorn Sutton, is the main attraction at a Chatham Arts film series event tonight at Fearrington Village in Pittsboro. Also showing tonight is a short film by D.L. Anderson on Johnston County moonshiner Percy Flowers, called "Percy's Run."

You can read more about tonight's event here (there's also live music!).

What to Watch on Thursday: Strong guest stars on NBC sitcoms

Parks & Recreation (8:30pm, NBC) - Megan Mullally guest stars as Ron's ex-wife Tammy, who runs the local library and wants to take over Leslie's lot (formerly known as "Leslie's pit").

The Office (9pm, NBC) - Jim and Pam are forced to double-date with Michael and his new girlfriend, who just happens to be Pam's mom. I guess this is what Michael meant when he said a few weeks ago that he planned to "date her even harder."

30 Rock (9:30pm, NBC) - I hate to dwell on NBC, but really, how often do we get a chance to do that? Brian Williams has a guest cameo tonight, and that dude is flat-out funny. Okay, I'm stopping with this and promise not to promote "whatever" is in the NBC 10pm slot.

The Last One (10pm, UNC-TV) - This is a treat. It's local filmmaker Neal Hutcheson's Emmy-winning documentary on Popcorn Sutton, an Appalachian moonshiner who went into the mountains to make one last batch of liquor and let Neal come along to film. If you haven't seen this yet, you should definitely tune in. Sadly, Popcorn passed away earlier this year

Real Housewives of Orange County (10pm, Bravo) - It kills me to write this, but Adrienne watched the first episode and said it's pretty good. Apparently these women actually address the "controversies" going on since the end of last season (such as losing  homes and husbands) instead of denying and fighting about it (yes, Atlanta, we're looking at you).

Popcorn Sutton documentary wins Emmy award

"The Last One," Neal Hutcheson's documentary on the late Appalachian moonshiner Popcorn Sutton , has won an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for Outstanding Achievement in Television Programming Excellence.

Hutcheson, a video producer at NC State, made "The Last One" through his own production company, Sucker Punch Pictures.  "The Last One" won in the category of "cultural documentary."  Winners were announced at the 35th Southeast Regional Emmy Awards this past Saturday in Atlanta.

Johnny Knoxville posts new Popcorn Sutton video

Jackass star Johnny Knoxville spent some time last fall with Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton, shooting video for an upcoming project. Knoxville eulogized Popcorn on his website this week, and posted some of the video and a few photos, including one of the John Deere green Ford Fairlane in which Popcorn died on Monday.

Check out Knoxville's blog here, but be aware there is some explicit language shown on the photo of Popcorn's headstone. The video also has some explicit language.

Popcorn was the subject of a Neal Hutcheson documentary on moonshining in Appalachia which has aired on UNC-NC.

Popcorn Sutton's death confirmed a suicide

Pam Sutton, wife of infamous moonshiner Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton, confirmed her husband's death by suicide, saying he was depressed about serving an 18-month prison term.

Mrs. Sutton said Popcorn died from carbon-monoxide poisoning.

"We tried everything we could to leave him on house arrest," she told the Asheville Citizen-Times, "and they wouldn't do it. So I thank the federal court for this."

Popcorn Sutton dead of possible suicide

Popcorn Sutton --  rascally Appalachian moonshiner, folk hero, and subject of the documentary The Last One -- is dead.

Sutton died in his home in Tennessee and his death is being investigated as a possible suicide.

Popcorn Sutton was supposed to report to federal prison this week to begin serving an 18-month sentence for making illegal liquor and possessing a firearm as a felon.

The Last One, which shows Popcorn Sutton making a batch of moonshine in the Appalachian mountains, was filmed by local documentarian Neal Hutcheson, and has aired on UNC Television channels.

The Last One premieres on UNC-NC

The Last One, UNC-NC (Channel 204)
This highly entertaining documentary is one of our favorites, so we're glad it's finally getting a chance at a slightly wider audience now on UNC-NC.  (Though we have to wonder why it's not available on the main station, UNC-TV, for those without cable or digital cable).

NCSU filmmaker Neal Hutcheson has documented what was supposed to be the last batch of moonshine made by infamous Appalachian moonshiner Popcorn Sutton. In The Last One, Hutcheson captures not only the pride and proficiency of Sutton's work, but explores the history of moonshining and its place in Appalachian culture.

But mostly, Popcorn Sutton is just a treat to watch. Be sure to read our full review here, from the film's premiere on The Documentary Channel in December. And in a sad postscript, Sutton has since gotten into a little trouble with the law. Those blasted revenuers.

The Last One is showing all next week on UNC-NC, starting tomorrow afternoon at 3pm. Click below for a full list of show times.

Sad news on Popcorn Sutton

Happiness readers may remember a documentary called The Last One which we promoted here back in December. It's a fascinating look at an old moonshiner named Popcorn Sutton in North Carolina's Appalachian mountains. Popcorn made what he thought at the time was his last batch of liquor and allowed NCSU filmmaker Neal Hutcheson to document it.

Well, there have been some sad developments since the making of The Last One. Popcorn made one more batch and the Revenuers got him -- and now a judge has made an example of him. Popcorn was sentenced on Monday to 18 months in prison. Hutcheson was present for Popcorn's sentencing and reported on the ugly event. Read about it here

The Last One - Popcorn and moonshine in North Carolina

I could watch Popcorn Sutton all day. Stacking rocks, building stills, smoothing bran paste, shaking moonshine in clear Kerr jars... As long as he's talking about what he's doing at the same time, I'm watching and listening.

In his new documentary, "The Last One," Neal Hutcheson, a film studies graduate from NC State University, has captured the meticulous and precarious art of moonshining, and at the same time, has captured the life and spirit of the rascally Popcorn Sutton.
