Canceled: "The Gates" are closed

ABC has apparently canceled its midseason vampire-werewolf drama, "The Gates."

The network hasn't officially announced the show's demise, but several of the show's stars are tweeting the sad news to fans.

That's a shame. Now we'll never find out what happens to Charlie now that Devon has turned him into a ... well, we don't really know what that was. And also, we'll miss seeing Pittsboro's Andrea Powell as the uptight werewolf mom, Karen Crezki.

What to Watch on Sunday: "Gates" and "Food Truck" finales, "Boardwalk" debut

Boardwalk Empire (9pm, HBO) - Tonight is the Martin Scorsese-directed debut of HBO's new drama set in Atlantic City at the dawn of Prohibition. Steve Buscemi (left) plays Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, who controls the booze going through the town. Read our review and make a date to tune in.

Great Food Truck Race (9pm, Food) - In tonight's season finale, not only do we find out of Grill 'Em All can beat the undefeated and seemingly undefeatable Nom Nom Truck for the top prize, but also learn officially if Durham's Only Burger truck won the network's online food truck contest.

The Gates (9pm, ABC) - Two new back-to-back episodes end out the first season (the show is currently waiting to hear if they'll get picked up for a second). In the first episode, Buckley and Vanessa make a decision that has ramifications for the entire community. At 10pm, the Monohans prepare to leave The Gates, but Charlie complicates things by running away with Andie. Also, the Radcliffes persue Devon, who has the means to destroy their entire race.

Fantasia for Real (10pm, VH1) - Fantasia's reality show gets even more real in the second season. In the opener, Fantasia has everyone moved out of her house and Aunt Bunny confronts her about tabloid rumors concerning her love life.

What to Watch on Sunday: An assist from Josie Tigertail on "Glades"

Rubicon (9pm, AMC) - A security breach at API leads the FBI to put the department on lockdown, and Katherine suspects her home is no longer safe. AMC has a marathon of the first 6 episodes "Rubicon" today starting at 9am, and then this new episode at 9pm.

The Great Food Truck Race (9pm, Food) - Loving this show. The four remaining teams travel to New Orleans, where a surprise catfish-cookoff awaits. I bet the Ragin' Cajun will cry for sure when he finds out about this! (Vote for Durham food truck Only Burger to be on this show next season!)

Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch (9pm, VH1) - Two women remain and Chad's choice comes down to passion versus a "close mental connection." Oh my. I wonder which he'll choose.

The Glades (10pm, A&E) - Jim (left) investigates the death of a Native American tribal elder who crashes to her death through a skylight at the Blues Rock Casino, and the case has him collaborating with Josie Tigertail, a tribal police officer. Later, Callie gets jealous when she sees Jim interacting with Josie Tigertail. I'm promoting this only so I can say "Josie Tigertail." I think I would rather watch a show about him. Or her.

The Gates (10pm, ABC) - Nick learns more about Claire and Dylan's vampiric past when a kidnapper snatches their daughter Emily.

Mad Men (10pm, AMC) - A quickly approaching deadline causes stress at the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce office.

What to Watch on Sunday: "Mad Men" Christmas party

Rubicon (8pm, AMC) - The pilot of AMC's new cloak-and-dagger conspiracy thriller repeats at 8pm and then a new episode airs at 9pm. Read more about the series and then DVR both episodes.

True Blood (9pm, HBO) - Sam intervenes when Melinda and Joe Lee rope Tommy into a dog-fighting ring (anyone else sick of Sam's new family???), Eric hatches a plan to get information from Queen Sophie-Anne, and Sookie makes one last effort to rescue Bill.

Mad Men (10pm, AMC) - The office Christmas party is nearly spoiled by the late arrival of a surprise and not-so-welcome visitor -- the bastard Lucky Strikes executive (played by Darren Pettie, left) who got Sal (Bryan Batt) fired last season.

The Gates (10pm, ABC) - A vampire slays a resident inside the Gates and Nick gets Dylan to help him find the killer, while Dylan's wife Claire tries to end things with Christian.

The Glades (10pm, A&E) - The dead body of a businessman is discovered just before the annual high school football Muck Bowl event, and Jim hits roadblocks when Pohokee's star player starts looking like a prime suspect. Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden guest stars.

What to Watch on Sunday: The return of "Mad Men"

Mad Men (10pm, AMC) - In the first episode of Season 4, titled "Public Relations," Don's reluctance to talk about himself blows an important interview with an big magazine, while the new firm of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce tries to woo the wholesome Jantzen swimwear company. Also, Pete and Peggy stage a stunt at a grocery store to get more ad money from their client, and Roger sets Don up on a blind date. Read more about the premiere in our review.

My Boys (10pm, TBS) - Season 4 opens with two new back-to-back episodes. In the first, PJ and her friends come to terms with the loss of one of their buddies, who moved to China for work (that's right, Jim Gaffigan does not return for this season). In the second episode, Mike is upset when the gang goes to a fancy restaurant without him, so he has his own grown-up evening with Brendan at an upscale bar.

The Gates (10pm, ABC) - Marcus looks into the disappearance of Theresa, and Nick may  have to enter into an alliance with a vampire who saved his life.

Army Wives (10pm, AMC) - An AWOL soldier is arrested after missing her deployment and Grant Chandler (Harry Hamlin) takes the case.

Entourage (10:30pm, HBO) - Drama gets off on the wrong foot with potential costar John Stamos, and Eric and Scott find common ground in advancing Vince's career and the future of their company.

What to Watch on Sunday: "True Blood" has gore galore

Leverage (9pm, TNT) - The high-tech outlaws enter the country music scene to shut down a shady country music executive. Somehow during all this, Eliot inadvertently becomes a country music star. John Schneider guest stars and Jonathan Frakes directs.

True Blood (9pm, HBO) - The gore is getting to me, folks. I'm about to bow out of this one. First there was Bill's violent, neck-twisting sex scene with Lorena (left), and then last week's vicious feeding scene in the limo. Yuk. I may not have the stomach for the gore-porn that has become "True Blood," but plenty of other people do, so here's what's happening tonight: Sookie and Alcide seek counsel from an expert to deal with Russell's werewolves, Lafayette learns a lesson from Jesus, and Eric's thirst for revenge intensifies with a reminder from his past.

The Gates (10pm, ABC) - A hunter's disappearance brings unwanted attention to Brett and his pack of running wolves, while a secret affects Charlie and Andie's relationship.

Strange Sex (10pm, TLC) - TLC is branching out from toddlers, bakers and multiples into the world of strange sex. In the premiere episode of this new series, we meet a 73-year-old former model who is dating a 33-year-old father of two. In the 10:30 episode, scientists test the claims of a woman who insists she can think herself into ... you'll have to tune in to see.

What to Watch on Sunday: Ochocinco looks for love

Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch (9pm, VH1) - NFL (and "Dancing with the Stars") star Chad Ochocinco takes a page from Bret Michaels and launches his own reality dating show. In tonight's opener, Chad narrows a pool of 85 women down to 17 at his dating training camp. His NFL buddy Bernard Berrian helps out.

The Glades (10pm, A&E) - The pilot of a new scripted drama on A&E about a Chicago cop exiled to the Florida Everglades after being falsely accused of sleeping with his captain's wife. Tonight he gets his first case in the 'glades. Check out our review.

The Bakery Bunch (10pm, TLC) - A new reality series about a couple who run a family bakery in California while raising 4-year-old triplet boys. TLC finally managed to combine "cakes" and "multiples." Too bad these aren't little girls who could also enter toddler pageants, because that would be a TLC trifecta.

The Gates (10pm, ABC) - A robbery at the McAllister home sets off a string of similar crimes across town, and an old friend visits vampire Claire (right) and questions her recent transformation into happy homemaker. Also, Lukas invites Brett to join their (wolf)pack and blow off some steam. Tonight marks the debut of Pittsboro actress Andrea Powell, who plays Brett's mother.

What to Watch on Saturday: CBS debuts "The Bridge"

The Bridge (8pm, CBS) - The first episode of a new CBS series about a beat cop (Aaron Douglas) who is fed up with the way police offers are being treated, so he becomes something of an activist and is voted in as the leader of the police union. Tonight's premiere is two hours.

Celebrity Ghost Stories (8pm, BIO) - This show featuring celebrities recounting hauntings is surprisingly creepy. The two back-to-back episodes tonight from last season (new season begins next week) feature Jay Thomas, Justine Bateman, Jeffrey Ross, Lisa Rinna, and Traci Lords.

Doctor Who (9pm, BBC America) - The Doctor tries to solve the mystery of a staircase on which people ascend but never descend.

The Gates (10pm, NBC) - A repeat of the last "Gates" episode, which aired a couple weeks ago. The new police chief investigates the murder of the former police chief, focusing his suspicion on British vampire Claire.

Q&A with Pittsboro actress on ABC's "The Gates"

This is an unabridged version of our Q&A, which ran into today's print edition.

Pittsboro actress Andrea Powell has landed a hair-raising role on ABC's supernatural summer drama, "The Gates." Powell plays Karen Crezki, the mother of temperamental teen heartthrob and star athlete Brett Crezki.

Oh yeah, Brett is also a werewolf.

Powell's episodes begin this Sunday (10pm on ABC) and she'll appear on and off throughout the rest of the season. You can also see Powell in an upcoming movie with Renee Zellweger and Forest Whitaker, "My Own Love Song," and also in "Get Low" with Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek.

We caught up with Powell this week and asked her about her role on "The Gates" and about managing an acting career from Chatham County.

What to Watch on Sunday: Big premieres, bigger finales

Tudors (9pm, Showtime) - Season four comes to an end with Henry defeating a formidable rival and facing his own mortality. He is also haunted by the apparitions of his former wives, who gather for what appears to be one final confrontation.

True Blood (9pm, HBO) - Sookie may be an unwitting pawn in a plot by Russell Edgington, the Vampire King of Mississippi, to expand his influence. Also, Jason rides shotgun with Andy on a drug bust, and Lafayette uses fear to prove a point to Tara.

Scoundrels (9pm, ABC) - The series premiere of a new comedy-drama about a woman (Virginia Madsen) who tries to put her family of criminals on the right path after her con-man husband (David James Elliott) gets a particularly harsh prison sentence.

The Gates (10pm, ABC) - Another summer series premiere from ABC. In this one, a former city cop takes a job as police chief in the suburbs and works a missing persons case that has him investigating his new neighbors. It's darker than the silly ABC promos you've seen.

Treme (10pm, HBO) - It's the 90-minute first season finale of David Simon's exceptional series set in post-Katrina New Orleans. Tonight's finale comes together in a devastatingly beautiful way. And the cast shines, from the Big Chief Clarke Peters (right) to Khandi Alexander, John Goodman, Wendell Pierce, Steve Zahn, and Melissa Leo. Don't miss.

The Real L-Word (10pm, Showtime) - The premiere of a new reality series that follows six lesbians in Los Angeles.

Also Tonight:  Timothy Hutton's high-tech Robin Hood series "Leverage" returns for its third season premiere (9pm, TNT); Vivica Fox guest stars on "Drop Dead Diva" (9pm, Lifetime); Harry Hamlin guest stars on "Army Wives" (10pm, Lifetime); "Til Death" is mercy-killed aon Fox (7pm); a new Lifetime movie at 8pm;with Tia and Tamera Mowry (reviewed here), and Syfy has a two-part (4 hour!) movie tonight called "Phantom," starting at 7pm (check out Adrienne's review).
