Canceled: CBS canceled some $#*! today

CBS canceled some $#*! today, including the Twitter-inspired William Shatner sitcom "$#*! My Dad Says."

They also canceled the "How I Met Your Mother" copycat sitcom "Mad Love," which starred Sarah Chalke and Jason Biggs, and the pretty good legal dramedy "The Defenders," which starred Jim Belushi and Jerry O'Connell.

No word yet on CBS bubble shows "CSI: NY" and "Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior." We'll update you when something happens with those.

What to Watch on Friday: Belushi and Aykroyd together again (sort of)

The Defenders (8pm, CBS) - Nick (Jim Belushi) reluctantly defends a scornful judge, played by Dan Aykroyd, who is charged with multiple counts of drug possession.

Who Do You Think You Are (8pm, NBC) - The Vanessa Williams and Tim McGraw episodes this season have been great. Tonight, Rosie O'Donnell traces her roots, focusing on her late mother's life. The journey takes her to Ireland. There was a whole lot of crying in the previews.

Real Time with Bill Maher (10pm, HBO) - Guests are reporter Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, editor John Heilemann, talk-show host Tavis Smiley, and filmmaker Kevin Smith. Here's last week's Overtime, if you missed it.

What to Watch on Wednesday: It's a Wonderful 'Psych'

The Sing-Off (8pm, NBC) - The groups perform medleys of songs from a single artist and collaborate on the Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends."

Let's Spend the Night Together: Confessions of Rock's Greatest Groupies (8:30pm, VH1) - Pamela Des Barres, former groupie and author of two books about being a groupie, goes on the road to hear rock groupies tell their stories.

Psych (9pm, USA) - A two-hour block of new "Psych" episodes tonight. In the first, Shawn bumbles a high-profile case against a crime lord, resulting in the Psych team and Henry's firings. Then Shawn has dreams that show him what Santa Barbara would be like if he had never returned (hence the bizarre shot of Gus, Dule Hill, at right). In the 10pm episode, an animal trainer's death is pinned on a polar bear, but Shawn suspects foul play and takes it upon himself to find the real killer and save his furry friend.

Hell's Kitchen (9pm, Fox) - In the Season 8 finale, the final two "chefs" must prepare five-course meals to be judged by five L.A. - area executive chefs and food service executives.

The Defenders (10pm, CBS) - Nick and Pete defend a trouble former football player arrested for assault, and Pet's father (James Brolin) unexpectedly arrives in town and is charged with grand theft auto.

What to Watch on Wednesday: "Terriers," "Terriers," and also, "Terriers."

Law & Order: SVU (9pm, NBC) - An environmentalist's body is found at an industrial laundry plant, and the investigation puts Benson and Stabler in danger. When more victims are discovered, Benson unexpectedly reflects on her past while bonding with a victim's daughter, played by Maria Bello.

Modern Family (9pm, ABC) - All of the ABC comedies look good tonight, but on "Modern Family," Phil is perplexed by a faulty smoke detector, Gloria and Manny pay a surprise visit to Jay at work, and Cameron tries to get Lily in a commercial.

Terriers (10pm, FX) - Listen up. "Terriers" is not about dogs. It's a great show about private detective buddies that you should all be watching. Tonight, as Gretchen's wedding nears, Hank learns some troubling information about her fiance. Also, Britt tracks down the hooker (D.J. "Shangela" Pierce) who ripped of a teenage boy. Britt also begins to suspect that Katie's odd behavior means that she's pregnant.

The Defenders (10pm, CBS) - When a Las Vegas entertainment icon is suffocated to death in his mansion and his girlfriend is charged with the crime, Pete reluctantly agrees to represent her.

In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts: All Access Nashville (10pm, ABC) - Robin Roberts interviews Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, LeAnn Rimes, and Miranda Lambert. And yes, ABC is air ing the CMA awards next week.

What to Watch on Wednesday: L-O-L-A, LO:LA

Suvivor: Nicaragua (8pm, CBS) - A battle erupts over a hidden immunity idol. Tune in to keep track of how our Tar Heel players are doing, then check back here tonight for our recap of the show.

Undercovers (8pm, NBC) - I'm giving this show one more week to amuse me. Tonight, married spies Steven and Samantha (right) go on the hunt for a kidnapped scientist whose captors plan to force her to make a bomb to be used in an attack.

The Middle is Better With a Modern Family in Cougar Town (8pm, ABC) - ABC's solid two-hour comedy block is simply not to be missed (especially that second hour).

Law & Order: SVU (9pm, NBC) - A woman (Jennifer Love Hewitt) objects to having a rape kit done after she is raped repeatedly by the same man. Benson learns that some precincts don't even process their rape kits, but then an L.A. detective (crossover alert! crossover alert!) played by Skeet Ulrich is able to help her with the case.

Law & Order: LA (10pm, NBC) - The latest spinoff from the now-canceled "Law & Order" mothership takes place in Los Angeles, with Skeet Ulrich and Corey Stoll as detectives who investigate crimes. Terence Howard and Alfred Molina will alternate as the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders. The show will also eventually feature Peter Coyote as their poor man's "Jack McCoy." We have no review (read this instead) because NBC wouldn't send us a screener. I wonder if it has anything to do with all my ranting and raving and name-calling from that time they canceled "Law & Order."  Hmmm....

The Defenders (10pm, CBS) - While we didn't buy for a second that Frank Sinatra Junior is that hard a ticket to get in Vegas, we were still charmed by this show's premiere. Tonight, Nick defends a woman accused of running down a jogger while talking on her cell phone.

Terriers (10pm, FX) - Hank and Britt return to the Lindus case, when Lindus himself hires them to break into one of his offices and steal $25,000 from his safe.

What to Watch on Wednesday: ABC comedies are stars of another big premiere night

Undercovers (8pm, NBC) - The debut of a new show about married former spies (Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who reenter the world of espionage. Gerald McRaney stars as their handler. Here's our review.

Hell's Kitchen (8pm, Fox) - Season 8 opens with 16 alleged chefs who mostly appear to be crazy and who mostly do not appear to know how to cook. Here's more on this season's crazies.

Better With You (8:30pm, ABC) - A new sitcom about three couples from one family, all at different stages in their relationship. We review it here.

Law & Order: SVU (9pm, NBC) - In a special 2-hour 12th-season opener, a 10-year-old girl runs away and is found with a man (Henry Ian Cusick from "Lost") who denies any wrongdoing. Joan Cusack and Peter Strauss (left) also star.

Criminal Minds (9pm, CBS) - The sixth season opens with the team still trying to find the serial killer who is terrorizing Los Angeles and who now has detective Spicer's daugther as his hostage.

Keep reading for many more premieres, including scoop on Jennifer Aniston's guest role on "Cougar Town."

Pleading guilty to enjoying "The Defenders"

I'll be honest: I fully expected to be writing about how lame "The Defenders" (CBS, 10 tonight) is.

After all, it stars Jim Belushi, who was on the lame, yet inexplicably long-lasting "According to Jim," and Jerry O'Connell, who just bugs me.

But you know what? "The Defenders" is good. It doesn't reinvent the lawyer show or anything, but it's good precisely because of Belushi and O'Connell. Ain't that a kick in the head?

New CBS fall TV schedule

What is the grand CBS plan for fall?

Well, they canceled a whole bunch of stuff yesterday, and they're switching the nights for "CSI: New York" and "CSI: Miami." They'll also move "Survivor" from Thursdays to Wednesdays, and move "Big Bang Theory" from Monday to Thursday. Following "Big Bang" will be a new William Shatner sitcom called "$#*! My Dad Says."

Here's how things shake out (new shows in bold):
