There are lots of sweet things in "The Carrie Diaries"

Prequels make me cringe a little. Remakes are bad enough, but the goal of prequels is to attach themselves to a work and tell its origin story. For a fan of a much beloved work, that's a personal attack.

And I was a fan of the much-beloved "Sex and the City," so I was leery of "The Carrie Diaries" (8 tonight, the CW), a prequel that reveals how Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker's character) came to be.

Yet "The Carrie Diaries" is a sweetheart of a show, the story of a girl and her friends coming of age in the 80s. If it stays on course, it could inspire the same love SATC did, this time among the Young Adult set. (Not to mention among those who still identify with those YA years.)

The first episode begins a few months after curly haired, fashion-loving Connecticut-living Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb) has lost her mother. The loss has left the family stunned; father Tom (Matt Letscher) is numb and left with two daughters, sister Dorrit (Stefania Owen) is perpetually angry. Carrie finds some comfort with her friend Mouse (Ellen Wong), Maggie, (Katie Findlay) and Walt (Brendan Dooling), who is also Maggie's boyfriend.

Also at school are nemesis Donna LaDonna (Chloe Bridges) and handsome new guy Sebastian (Austin Butler), a kind of early Mr. Big.

In an effort to help Carrie move forward after her mom's death, her dad and the school's counselor cook up the idea that she do a once-a-week internship in Manhattan at a law firm. It's a dream come true for Carrie (the Manhattan part, not the law firm part) and it opens up a new world. She meets Larissa, (Freema Agyeman), a Brit hipster who works at Interview magazine, and introduces young Carrie to Manhattan nightlife.

Although Carrie isn't a writer yet, we get a glimpse of her developing talent because the show uses the voiceover narration device from SATC. And, in the same way, that narration makes the ties between the disparate but related story lines.

While realistic, SATC also had this fairy tale quality; it was often a love note to NY and its perpetual allure. That theme continues in "The Carrie Diaries" yet it feels fresh through these younger eyes, and there's a hint of menace. Carrie's NY friends don't know she's a high school girl. It will be interesting to see if young Carrie ever almost succumbed to the dangers of that world.

Although a bit too pulled together stylistically (style evolves after all and this Carrie is already there), and maybe too pretty (I gotta believe Carrie had an awkward phase), Robb is convincing as a young Carrie. She has that same mix of kindness and pragmatism, without the edge Carrie probably developed from living in NY. Her character is already playing the anchor among her friends, the one everyone counts on. And it's nice that her crowd this time is a bit more diverse (Mouse is Asian and Larissa is Afro British).

Go ahead, take a peek at "The Carrie Diaries."
