Going on road doesn't faze Duke

DURHAM — Duke has taken care of several unsavory streaks by going 3-1 to start the 2008 season. The next one they want to knock off the shelf is a 16-game ACC road losing streak.

The Blue Devils haven't been a competitive team like this in many years but they didn't necessarily cower in the corner playing on the road the past two seasons. They played some of their most competitive games in losing in front of anti-Duke crowds at Wake Forest (14-13) and Alabama (30-14) in 2006, and Miami (24-14) in 2007.

Lewis & Riley discuss 'the play'

DURHAM — Duke kind of outed Virginia on Saturday during a 31-3 win, no more so than when quarterback Thad Lewis and receiver Eron Riley hooked up for a 30-yard touchdown in third quarter.

On the rare play when Riley was facing single coverage, Duke's offense caught Virginia napping. Duke coach David Cutcliffe said after the game that he was so eager for center Brian Morgan to snap the ball and start the play that he eventually started running with Riley down the sideline.

By the numbers: Lewis to Riley

Duke football has boasted a dangerous scoring combination since last season but winning is shining a brighter spotlight on QB Thaddeus Lewis and WR Eron Riley.

The duo hooked up for a 15th, 16th, and 17th time in their careers in the Blue Devils' 41-31 win over Navy at Wallace Wade Stadium on Saturday. Here's a behind-the-numbers look at the best scoring combo in Duke football history:

What Cutcliffe is saying ...

DURHAM — Anyone truly interested in what might be different about a Duke football program that has won one game in the past two years has to pay attention to not only what first-year coach David Cutcliffe is saying but how he is saying it.

To start the "Cut" era at Duke, here's a sampling from Sunday's Blue Devil media day at the Yoh Football Center.

Duke's QB takes charge

DURHAM — Thaddeus Lewis is starting his third year as QB1 for the Blue Devils differently than the previous two seasons. Namely he said during Sunday's media day he isn't clueless like he was as a freshman, nor is he dreading it like he did a year ago.

Entering the 2008 season, Lewis ranks second among active ACC players in career total offense (4,346 yards), passing yards (4,564) and passing touchdowns (32) behind Florida State's Drew Weatherford.

Lewis has also taken a liking to first-year Duke coach David Cutcliffe's tall tales. But does he believe them? Listen below.
