Back in the Game
Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. on ABC
Created by Mark and Robb Cullen, "Back in the Game" has Maggie Lawson (Juliette on "Psych") as a former college softball star who got pregnant, dropped out of school, got married and then divorced, and has -- along with her son -- moved back in with her boozy father, played by James Caan.
There's the usual "you were a terrible parent" tension (see "Mom" on CBS) between Lawson's Terry Jr. and her dad, Terry Sr. (see name note below). But here, Terry Jr. is also preoccupied with trying to keep her dad from being a negative influence on her impressionable, nerdy son.
And speaking of the nerdy son… Danny (Griffin Gluck) isn't athletically gifted, but he wants to play baseball to impress a girl he's crushing on. Unfortunately, he doesn't make the team and is ridiculed by some jerky dads who coach the better players. So Terry Jr. decides to make a team of all the misfits rejected by the jocks and coach the team herself.
So yes, it's a bit "Bad News Bears"-y. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. And "Back in the Game" has more than a few funny moments -- most of them courtesy of Caan, who is right at home in this role.
Note for Wolfpack fans: Caan's character, a former baseball player, is called Terry "The Cannon" Gannon because of his former pitching power, the same as the N.C. State guard (1981-85), who was called "The Cannon" because of his incredible 3-point-shooting skills. The more you know...
