Sunday's sales: A whole new set of deals for tax holiday

If you didn't like the looks of the deals on the first two days of the tax-free weekend, you've got one last chance.

If you've got the stamina to keep shopping, today's sales circulars and coupon inserts offer up new deal potential.

As I mentioned in my post on the new school supplies deals, there are some rare coupons in today's inserts, giving us extra savings on items such as Avery and Five Star binders, Scotch brand products and Five Star notebooks.

Here are a few other deals in Sunday's paper that might entice you into the stores today for tax-free savings:

School supply deals: Don't forget your coupons

These are the best school supplies deals for the entire week. But if you want to get them tax-free, you need to hit the stores today for the last day of the tax holiday.

Before you head out the door, don't forget to clip the coupons for school supplies in today's Sunday inserts. (These are pretty rare coupons that typically are released just once a year. My favorites are the coupons on Avery binders and Five Star products.) While you're doing your pre-shopping prep work, print those Post-it Note coupons I mentioned in the Friday's freebies post. Keep reading to see how you can score another freebie with those coupons at Target this week.

Here's a store-by-store breakdown:

Cash in on Sunday's coupons; database updated!

Today's N&O has 178 coupons with a face value of approximately $232, many with a definite back-to-school theme.

There are several coupons on school supplies, which have great savings potential.  Talk about perfect timing because you still have today to combine those coupon savings with the state tax holiday.

Here are some of the more unusual and high-value coupons:

Promotions flooding in to compete for your tax-free dollars

As expected, the promotions for tax-free weekend are flooding in.

Today's N&O is full of advertisements and I also heard from local businesses hoping to entice customers over the tax holiday.

Lots of the deals are from retailers selling tax-free merchandise. Other deals are coming from merchants who don't sell tax-free items but want to compete for shoppers' dollars. And I don't blame them. In these tough times, shopkeepers can't afford an entire weekend without customers.

Some of the highlights:

20 FREE Bic pens at Office Max on tax-free weekend

In today's N&O, Office Max is advertising 10-packs of Bic pens for 50 cents during this weekend's upcoming tax holiday.

Pair that sale with the $1/2 coupon from the 7/31 Smart Source coupon insert and you walk out with 20 pens for FREE.

And since the sale is during tax-free weekend, you won't even have to pay the two pennies in tax.

Old Navy launched a shopping promotion this week that will work nicely with the upcoming tax holiday.

For every $20 you spend at Old Navy, you earn $10 in "Super Cash" to spend later.

The promotion started Monday and runs through Aug. 18 so purchases you make Friday, Saturday and Sunday during tax-free weekend will qualify.

The Super Cash is redeemable Aug. 25 through Aug. 29. For every $10 you redeem, you must spend $20.

Best school supply deals of the week (July 31-Aug. 6)

What a week for buying school supplies.

The office supply stores are offering penny and nickel deals and the drugstores and grocery stores all have deals.  Even Toys R Us is getting in on the act with sales on Crayola products.

On top of that, North Carolina's sales tax holiday starts Friday so keep that in the back of your mind as you're studying the deals.

Here's a store-by-store breakdown:

Giveaway: $10 gift card to Target

What better way to get in the mood for North Carolina's upcoming tax-free weekend than giving away a little spending money?

Leave me a comment sharing your best shopping tips and strategies for the tax holiday and you'll be entered to win a $10 Target gift card.

I'm interested in hearing from all types of savvy shoppers and savers: parents, college kids, singles, empty nesters, retirees, you name it. If you love a bargain, I want to hear from you.

Are you of the every-penny-counts philosophy? Or do you only brave the crowds when you're buying a big-ticket item like a computer?

Do you take advantage of the tax holiday to stock up on a year's worth of underwear and socks? Or do you make a point of staying home and avoiding the whole mess?

I'll pick a winner Tuesday and send the card out ASAP. With any luck, it should arrive in plenty of time for the tax-free weekend sales.
