Sonnanstine to take mound for Bulls

DURHAM — Andy Sonnanstine will start for the Durham Bulls tonight, his second start here since being demoted by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Sonnanstine was the odd man out when ace Scott Kazmir came off the disabled list, as the team had no options left on Jeff Niemann and didn't want to demote lefty prospect David Price, who had been hit around badly by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Price gets The Call

With staff ace Scott Kazmir on the disabled list, the Tampa Bay Rays called up Durham Bulls pitcher David Price Monday.

The lefty pitcher, 23, will start today against the Cleveland Indians.

Price is the top pitching prospect in the country but went 1-4 with a 3.93 ERA in eight starts with Durham this season. But on May 17, he didn’t allow a hit in five innings. In 34 1/3 innings, he struck out 35, walked 18 and allowed 28 hits.

Price, mostly sharp, gets no support

DURHAM — Durham Bulls lefty starter David Price didn’t get the win.

But he didn’t look bad in the Bulls’ 3-0 loss to the Gwinnett Braves at Durham Bulls Athletic Park Thursday.

ALCS trophy at DBAP

The Tampa Bay Rays’ first American League Championship Trophy, clinched by Bulls’ starting pitcher David Price, who recorded the final four outs against the Boston Red Sox in Game 7 of the ALCS last fall, will be on display at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Friday and Saturday.

Price has work to do — in Durham

David Price may not like it.

But Durham Bulls fans will.

Price, who had memorable appearances during the Tampa Bay Rays’ World Series run last fall, closing some big playoff games with his dominant stuff, was — along with four other players — optioned to the Bulls, the Rays’ Triple-A franchise on Wednesday.

Bulls roster starting to materialize

It might be weeks before the Durham Bulls open their season on April 9, but spring training is in full swing and the Tampa Bay Rays, trimming 12 players, assigned three to Durham, a Bulls press release said Monday.
