"Talking Funny" delivers laughs and some comic learning

Comedians make it look so easy, but as revealed on "Talking Funny" (HBO, 9 tonight) there's a sweet science to doing stand-up, and the best comedians have mastered it.

Learning that is one of the pleasures of listening to Ricky Gervais (the executive producer of the show), Louis C.K., Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock.  In the nearly hour-long conversation, the four talk about their craft, revealing the workings of successfully telling a joke, what makes them laugh, and laying out the different approaches each takes in everything from encores to language.

What to Watch on Friday: Singing country and 'Talking Funny'

Friday Night Lights (8pm, NBC) - Coach Taylor realizes not everyone is pleased with the Lions' first game of the season. Also, Vince receives some unexpected benefits due to his status as a football player, and Luke's aggression on the field has repercussions.

Royal Wedding of a Lifetime (8pm, Lifetime) -- More episodes in Lifetime's look at the upcoming wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Girls' Night Out: Superstar Women of Country (8pm, CBS) - A tribute night honoring women of country music includes performances by the Judds, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Carrie Underwood, and Reba McEntire.

Talking Funny (9pm, HBO) - A one-hour special in which comedians Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Ricky Gervais, and Louis C.K. discuss the philosophy of their craft, their styles, the value of recycling material, their favorite bits, and memories of routines that were instant successes. Executive-produced by Gervais. Read our review, then learn more about the show and watch some clips.

Fringe (9pm, Fox) - Walternate's thirst for revenge drives him to cause trouble in the other universe.

20/20 (10pm, ABC) - Elton John and his partner David Furnish discuss parenthood with Barbara Walters, and introduce their son Zachary, who was born in December.

Sanctuary (10pm, Syfy) - Magnus returns to a disheveled Sanctuary just hours before it is to be inspected by the chief of a UN security team. But first, she encounters Henry, who claims he was attacked by Will. And then she learns Bigfoot is missing.

Gervais. Seinfeld. Rock. C.K.: Looking forward to 'Talking Funny'

We can't wait for this. A new HBO special in which four of our greatest living comedians -- Ricky Gervais, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, and Louis C.K. -- sit down to talk about being funny and what makes something funny (or not funny).

'Talking Funny' doesn't air until April 22, and we'll have more about it here before the premiere, but we hate for you to wait that long to get a taste.
