How local TV stations stack up in the quest for viewers

In case you missed it, here's the story from this weekend's News & Observer about the local TV news stations and what they're all doing to win viewers.

Nutshell: WRAL is the ratings leader overall, but WTVD rules with women. And tonight, former longtime WRAL anchor Pam Saulsby (left, with Wes Hohenstein and Penn Holderness) co-anchors her first nightly newscast on NBC-17.

Univision to launch Spanish-language newscast in the Triangle

WUVC Univision 40 is launching a 30-minute Spanish-language newscast in the state that will air weekdays at 6 p.m.

The newscast, "Noticias 40," will begin airing Aug. 29.

The station said the newscast will attempt to tap into the growing Hispanic population in the Triangle and Fayetteville areas.

The newscast will be anchored by Jaime Zea and Edwin Pitti.

Univision is also expanding newscasts in Atlanta, Dallas and Houston.

“We are excited to bring to the area’s rapidly growing Hispanic population the first Spanish language daily newscast,” said Luis Fernandez-Rocha, a senior vice president with Univision Local Media, in a release.

“Our viewers and constituents rely on Univision 40 for news coverage that will inform and empower their families and communities on decisions that impact them.”

TV News: Big developments with Scrubs, Leno, and more

*ABC is trying to bring Scrubs back for another season. (I guess they didn't get the Do Not Resuscitate order I signed and notarized and sent to ABC earlier this year). They have to figure out a way to lower the license fees, plus the show's star Zach Braff is reportedly willing to appear in at least some of the episodes.
