"Sharktopus" revels in its cheesy goodness

You've got to give it up to the makers of "Sharktopus" (Syfy, 9 tonight); it's produced by um, legendary horror guy Roger Corman; just by the title they're letting you know that you should not be taking this film seriously in any way.

So if you're up for a couple of hours of goofy viewing, jump on it.

S-11 (that's the sharktopus) is the creation of a mad scientist (Eric Roberts) and his brainy daughter (he keeps calling her pumpkin, much to her chagrin, so he switches to baby girl) to be a secret weapon for the Navy. In the first scene, they're showing off their creation to a military man. He's impressed. When they show off a bit too much, S-11's controls break down, it goes rouge and becomes a killing machine. The 'pus not only has shark teeth but its tentacles are sharpened. Scantily clad hotties are its primary victims.

What to Watch on Saturday: Amy Poehler, Katy Perry on SNL debut

Cats 101 (8pm, Animal Planet) - This is the episode featuring Homer the Blind Cat. Should be good.

Sharktopus (Syfy) - An original Syfy movie starring Eric Roberts as a military scientist who develops a monstrous shark-octopus hybrid, which goes on a killing spree on the resort beaches of Mexico after the mechanism that controls the beast is accidentally destroyed. Sounds entirely plausible.

Maternal Obsession (9pm, Lifetime) - A new Lifetime movie in which Jean Kelly plays a child-obsessed counselor who plots to take the baby of a teenager (Kristen Prout) after the girl comes to her for advice on adoption.

Saturday Night Live (11:30, NBC) - The 36th season of SNL opens with Amy Poehler (right) as host and the banned-by-Sesame-Street Katy Perry as musical guest. SNL has a few new faces this year: Vanessa Bayer, Paul Brittain, Taran Killam, and Jay Pharoah.

It's also a great night to catch up on some repeats you may have missed earlier in the week, CBS is showing "Hawaii Five-0" (8pm) and "Blue Bloods" (9pm), and NBC is showing "The Event" (8pm) and "Chase" (9pm) and "Law & Order: SVU" (10pm).

"Beast Legends" taps into your inner nerd

"Beast Legends" (Syfy, 10 tonight) is a goofy, educational romp, a show that takes itself seriously, even when it shouldn't.

The premise is this: over six episodes, a team takes on mythical creatures, exploring their origins, and gathering enough research to recreate it in 3D CGI in the "Beast Lab."

First up is the kraken, the giant sea creature made famous in "Clash of the Titans." The multi-cultural team --  a comic book artist, an adventurer, a biologist, and a legends expert (aka anthropologist) -- take on different aspects to learn about the beast. That includes talking to someone who has encountered a giant squid, catching a giant octopus to examine it, and climbing a ship's mast to see how big and strong the tentacles need to be to turn over a boat. In the lab, they debate whether their creation should have armor or lasers to shore up its super strength.

What to Watch on Thursday: CW premieres, "Rookie Blue" finale

Vampire Diaries (8pm, CW) - Season two opens with Elena finding her uncle John's bloody body and learning Jeremy's fate, and Damon realizing that Katherine has returned. Meanwhile, Caroline is taken to the hospital following a car accident, and Tyler's mysterious uncle Mason arrives in town.

Nikita (9pm, CW) - The pilot of a new show about a spy who returns to exact revenge on the clandestine agency that betrayed her after training her to be an assassin. Nikita is played by Maggie Q. Check out our review.

Rookie Blue (9pm, ABC) - In tonight's 2-hour season finale, the rookies face evaluations to determine whether or not they keep their badges, and Andy thinks about quitting the force altogether. But first, Andy and Chris make an arrest and unwittingly compromise a major drug sting. Andy tries to salvage the sting by going undercover with Swarek, but both their lives are endangered. Also, Dov learns a hard truth about his girlfriend and must choose between the job and his love life. Hopefully, WTVD won't pre-empt this again for another Carolina Panthers game.

Project Runway (9pm, Lifetime) - The remaining designers are assigned by judge Michael Kors to create resort attire.

Destination Truth (9pm, Syfy) - In the fourth season premiere, the Italian city of Pompeii is investigated for paranormal activity.

Beast Legends (10pm, Syfy) - In the first episode of this new Syfy series, the focus is on Kraken, a mythical sea monster (our review). Release him!

Watch What Happens Live (10pm, Bravo) - Andy Cohen opens his third season with Teresa Giudice and Stacie Scott Turner.

What to Watch on Saturday: "Persons Unknown" finale, new Hallmark movie

Persons Unknown (8pm, NBC) - I'm not sure I get any of this. Apparently there's an 11th episode called "Seven Sacrifices" that is not running on television, but you can watch it online at NBC.com or Hulu. Then tonight we get episodes 12 and 13, with 13 being the finale. First, the gang's supplies vanish while they're searching for Ulrich and Janet, leaving them to fend for themselves. In the finale, the abductees escape after a van crashes, and they try to restore normalcy to their lives. NBC has promoted "Persons Unknown" as a mini-series, but are also calling tonight's finale a "season finale." No word yet if the show will return next summer.

Bad Dog! (8pm, Animal Planet) - The opener of a new series that spotlights ill-behaved pets throughout the world.

The Wish List (9pm, Hallmark) - A perfectionist played by Jennifer Espisito makes a list of qualities she's looking for in a mate and soon finds a seemingly ideal guy (Mark Deklin). But she's also drawn to a kooky barista (David Sutcliffe) who encourages her to loosen up and explore her creative side.

Meteor Apocalypse (9pm, Syfy) - An enormous meteor explodes in the Earth's atmosphere, raining down deadly debris across the globe. And experts predict that in three days, Los Angeles will be destroyed. One frantic father embarks on a desperate race to rescue his wife and daughter before it's too late.

"Ghost Hunters" - A fan's take on the premiere

Since I've been cynical about the Syfy show "Ghost Hunters" in the past, I knew I wasn't the right person to objectively review the Season 6 premiere. So instead of watching it and complaining about how lame I think it is, I decided to give a true TAPS fan equal time, and offered the advance dvd of tonight's show to the biggest "Ghost Hunters" fan I know, my mother.

Her thoughts on the show follow. There may be some spoilers so don't keep reading if you don't already think every episode isn't exactly the same.

What to Watch on Saturday: Garbage moguls get creative

Garbage Moguls (8pm, National Geographic Channel) - A new series documenting the work at TerraCycle Inc, a green company that makes products from trash. Three episodes in a row air tonight. In the first, the company makes a line of pet products from recycled dog food bags. In the second episode at 9pm, plastic trash cans are made from potato chip bags and fishing lures are made from old cds. And at 10pm, investors offer TerraCycle a retail store for free, but the catch is they have to renovate, design, and stock it in 24 hours.

Persons Unknown (8pm, NBC) - The group feel confined and uneasy after learning they'll be restricted to the hotel, and things only get worse when they find personal items in their rooms.

Lake Placid 3 (9pm, Syfy) - A game warden (Colin Ferguson) moves into his aunt's lakeside cabin with his wife and young son. The little boy feeds the resident baby crocodiles until they grow up to be monstrous creatures that meanace the family.

Guitar Center Sessions: Peter Gabriel (9pm, Network 101) - The premiere of a new series from featuring musicians answering questions from an audience and performing their work. Only available on DirecTV.

Who is the Real Joran van der Sloot (10pm, A&E) - An examination of the murder case against Joran van der Sloot through forensic evidence, psychological examinations, and opinions from those who know him. Van der Sloot is accused in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway and recently confessed to killing a woman in Peru.

What to Watch on Saturday: Dean Cain battles Syfy "Frost Giant"

Persons Unknown (8pm, NBC) - Joe experiences scary side effects from his reeducation that alienate some of those in the group, and a new night manager arrives to restore order.

Cops (8pm, Fox) - Throwing out this "Cops" rerun so that a loyal reader can play his favorite drinking game: Tranny, Runner, or Drunk Crier? Two drinks for shirtless.

Last Chance Highway (8pm, Animal Planet) - Shelly rushes a rescue to the emergency room after complications from surgery, then has to save a dog with bad teeth from being put down at a shelter.

Frost Giant (9pm, Syfy) - An original Syfy movie in which a frozen alien ice monster menaces humans at a frozen outpost (maybe they can get Yukon Cornelius to tame him). Dean Cain (right) plays the leader of a group of explorers who digs up the creature, which has been buried for more than 200 years. After the monster kills the explorers, he heads to the mainland and begins to suck the energy from the earth. Also stars Lucy Brown.

What to Watch on Saturday: New TV movies in battle of good vs. evil

The Bridge (8pm, CBS) - A retired narcotics cop is killed along with his informant, prompting Internal Affairs to look for a killer from within the police department. Meanwhile, Frank cuts a deal with a former crime boss to help a jailed ex-cop.

Persons Unknown (8pm, NBC) - Dread sweeps through the group when Joe falls seriously ill, and even though Erika has the antidote, she won't give it to him unless he confesses his secret. Elsewhere, reporter Renbe and Kat attend Tori's funeral in Rome, and discover that Tori's ambassador father is also looking into her disappearance.

Jack's Family Adventure (9pm, Hallmark) - A successful ad man (Jonathan Silverman, left) tries to reconnect with his family by taking them on a monthlong vacation to a rustic cabin he recently inherited. The family is resistant at first, but start to enjoy themselves when they meet a cowboy (Peter Strauss) who teaches them about life's simpler pleasures.

Goblin (9pm, Syfy) - And now for a less family friendly offering... In this original Syfy movie, Halloween spawns a goblin that is determined to take a baby from an unsuspecting family, and it's up to their teenage daughter to save her baby brother from becoming the monster's meal. (Note to self: What the hell...)

What to Watch on Friday: Wal-Mart is now producing TV movies

The Jensen Project (8pm, NBC) - Perhaps this should be called the "The Wal-Mart Project." This original family adventure movie was produced and financed by Wal-Mart and Proctor & Gamble, because the companies believe people will buy their products if they see advertising on family-friendly programming. The movie is about two former members of a secret society of genius researchers who embark on a mission with their teen son to thwart a rogue colleague and secure potentially deadly technology. Along the way, family bonds are strengthened. And we're guessing, Wal-Mart rolls back prices on Charmin.

Eureka (9pm, Syfy) - A runaway project named "Tiny" causes a panic in the town during the Founder's Day celebration.

Haven (10pm, Syfy) - As she tries to adapt to her new life in Haven, Audrey joins Nathan in a probe of the destruction of a local bar, which is soon followed by other strange events.

DC Cupcakes (10pm, TLC) - A new unscripted series follows two sisters (alas, without multiples, as far as I can tell) who own a booming cupcake business in Washington, D.C. In the premiere, the sisters build a huge Mardi Gras mask out of 1,000 cupcakes and donate them to a charity fundraiser. In a second episode airing at 10:30, the sisters make a life-size dog out of cupcakes for a local animal shelter fundraiser.
