Here's what 55 cents can buy

I hit Harris Teeter early to shop the first day of Super Doubles armed with a detailed list, a fully loaded coupon binder and a back-up plan.

Luckily, the shelves were fully stocked and I walked out with a couple bags bulging with groceries and change back from a $1 bill.

Total before coupons and vic savings: $60.16.

Total paid: 55 cents.

Here's what I bought:

  • 3 Smart Balance half-gallons of milk
  • 2 Dawn dish liquids
  • 2 Blue Diamond Almonds
  • 2 Blue Diamond Nut-Thins
  • 1 Wholly Guacamole
  • 2 Crisco Oils
  • 3 Aveeno lotions
  • 1 Nuetrogena Hand Cream
  • 2 cans Swanson broth
  • 1 BestLife Buttery Spread
  • 1 Febreeze Set & Refresh
  • 1 Febreeze Air Effects
  • 1 Sara Lee pound cake

In addition to my paper coupons, I had digital e-vic coupons for one Dawn and both Febreeze products. I also had a raincheck on the bottles of Crisco oil, which made them just 27 cents each after Super Doubles.

Then I "paid" with a $4 OYNO coupon I earned last week. That left me with 55 cents of tax to pay. Even better, the register spit out another $4 coupon for me to spend on a future order.

You might be wondering how in the world I'm going to feed my family on this grocery order. Obviously not.

Since our pantry and freezer are pretty well-stocked, I have the luxury of taking the week off from a full-blown shopping trip.

But I will be heading back out later this week to pick up the great chicken and produce deals at Aldi. And if I have time, I'll return to Harris Teeter to snare a few more Super Doubles deals.

Wednesday Deals (Nov. 2-8)

This week's grocery deals are dominated by Super Doubles at Harris Teeter but there are still notable deals at the other supermarkets. You can pick up outstanding produce deals at Aldi as well as 89-cents-a-pound split chicken breasts and some super deals on holiday baking ingredients. Food Lion has nice produce deals, good buys on store-brand products and a $2.99 jug of Tide after coupon. Lowes Foods has a little bit of everything: good prices on baking supplies, a cereal deal and a great deal on PET ice cream. And Harris Teeter has a couple nice deals on top of Super Doubles.

UPDATED: Super Doubles deals list for Harris Teeter

Harris Teeter kicks off a weeklong Super Doubles coupon event starting at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, which means you'll have the opportunity to load up a grocery cart and pay just pennies on the dollar.

Using the prices at our local Harris Teeter stores AND the coupons we received here in the Triangle, I've come up with a fantastic list of FREE and extremely inexpensive groceries you should be able to score at your store.

I've walked the aisles of a local Harris Teeter, verified prices online, checked shelf tags for sales dates and read the fine print on coupons so you won't be disappointed when you get to the store.

Super Doubles possible at Harris Teeter!

The word on the street in couponland is that Harris Teeter will offer a Super Doubles coupon event starting Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Folks on the national coupon blogs are buzzing about it so I wanted to give all of you the big heads up. With cold rainy weather this weekend, what better pastime than clipping and organizing coupons, right?

Harris Teeter Super Doubles Update: Deals with Sunday's new coupons

If you've exhausted your supply of coupons on Super Doubles this week, the new batch in today's N&O provides a few more opportunities to snare some bargains, including two freebies!

Here's what I found:

Deal alert: FREE movie ticket when you buy candy and popcorn

Here's a great deal for movie lovers: Get a free movie ticket when you buy two medium-size bags of M&Ms and a 3-pack of Orville Redenbacher popcorn.

And the timing couldn't be more perfect because both the candy and the popcorn are on sale at Harris Teeter and there's a $1/2 coupon on the M&Ms that will Super Double this week.

Reporting in from Super Doubles: How did you do?

I saw a lot of folks with binders this morning at the Harris Teeter in Apex when I was there doing my deals just before 7 a.m.

I left happy, toting my $65.86 worth of groceries. I paid $5.20, a little more than a 92 percent savings.

How did you folks do? Please report in. I'd love to hear if you got all the deals you were hoping to find and how much you saved.

There was nothing fancy (or extreme) about my transaction -- just 20 coupons I clipped from the newspaper with the exception of my Lean Cuisine Qs, which I picked up on vacation in Maine earlier this summer, and the Sargento coupons, which came from the Penguin board in the grocery store.

Here's what I bought:

Wednesday deals (Aug. 10-16)

The Super Doubles event at Harris Teeter is definitely the headline of this week's grocery store sales, but there are still notable deals to be had at the other stores.

I especially like the free Bob Evans side dishes, free granola bars and free Kozy Shack puddings at Lowes Foods. The 3-day sale items at Food Lion are also noteworthy. And Harris Teeter has some great deals unrelated to Super Doubles, including Fiber One cereal for a buck and Arnold Sandwich Thins for 74 cents.

Read on for all the best deals of the week.

Updated again: Harris Teeter Super Doubles deals list for the Triangle

As promised, I did a little coupon reconnaissance at my local Harris Teeter store and have some nice additions to the deals list for Super Doubles, which starts at 7 a.m. Wednesday.

These are bargains I found on regularly priced items or items with a sale date that continues through Super Doubles.

Just so you know, I've tailored my list for deals we can actually get here in the Triangle, using the coupons we get here. Why waste time looking for a deal that doesn't exist in the Triangle.

(Since coupon values vary across the country, one region might get a $1/1 coupon while we get a .75/1 coupon, which makes a big difference when you're talking Super Doubles.)

Finally, keep in mind this list is a work in progress. I'll be adding to it throughout the day and early Wednesday morning as I find more deals.  Also, feel free to post potential deals you've spotted.
