Brodeur was really mad — wasn't he?

NEWARK, N.J. — Temper tantrum or gamesmanship?

One of lhe lasting images from Game 4 will always be Devils goalie Martin Brodeur storming off the ice after the 4-3 loss. Brodeur normally shows little, if any emotion. But after Jussi Jokinen's last-second goal won it for the Canes, he went off, slamming his stick into the board and leaving it in pieces.

Canes coach Paul Maurice said he did not see Brodeur's stormy display after the game, nor had he seen a replay of it. He did have an opinion on it, though.

"I think he's a real good pro and I think most things that were done were set up for Game 5 and had little to do with Game 4," Maurice said today.

Devils, Canes put Game 4 behind them

NEWARK, N.J. — How long did it take the Devils to get that stunning Game 4 finish out of their system?

"We walked out of the rink and it was over," Devils coach Brent Sutter said today.

To which Canes coach Paul Maurice added, "We did, too."

That's what the coaches say. Tonight, when the puck is dropped in Game 5, will come the real proof of which team has best put that game, that finish, behind them and moved on.

Game 6 starting time still TBA

If you'd like for Game 6 of the Canes-Devils series on Sunday to be an afteroon game at the RBC Center, pull for the New York Rangers to finish off the Washington Capitals tomorrow night.

If you'd prefer a Sunday night game, pull for the Caps to extend their series with a victory Friday.

That seems to be the way the starting time for Game 6 will be decided. If the Caps-Rangers series is over, the game will be shown by NBC, likely at 2 p.m. If it's a night game, likely at 7:30 p.m., it will be shown both by Versus and Fox Sports Carolinas, with Fox Sports Carolinas handling the telecast in the Triangle.

Langenbrunner, Salvador missing

NEWARK, N.J. — The Devils will play tonight's game at the Prudential Center without captain Jamie Langenbrunner or defenseman Bryce Salvador, coach Brent Sutter said.

Langenbrunner missed Games 3 and 4 in Raleigh with a "lower-body" injury. Salvador injured a leg during Game 4, was taken to the locker room and did not return to the game.

Sutter said defenseman Andy Greene would replace Salvador and would be paired with Niclas Havelid. He said Lagenbrunner's availability for the rest of the series is uncertain.

Maurice, Jokinen make right moves

Not long after his game-winning playoff goal against the Devils, the Canes' Jussi Jokinen was asked if he might be watching SportsCenter today to catch the highlights.

"I will watch," Jokinen said with a big smile.

Jokinen didn't have to watch long. The dramatic goal, scored with two-tenths of a second to play, was the lead story on ESPN's morning show.

Canes beat the clock, Devils

How did Hurricanes do it?

With eight seconds to play in the Tuesday's playoff game at the RBC Center, the Canes' Jussi Jokinen was attempting to stuff in a wraparound shot against Devils goalie Martin Brodeur. That seemed to be Carolina's best last-gasp chance to win Game 4, and Brodeur made the stop.

But ...

RALEIGH — Jussi Jokinen just barely beat the buzzer, giving the Carolina Hurricanes an all-important 4-3 victory at the RBC Center. Jokinen deflected a Dennis Seidenberg shot into the goal.

The series moves back to New Jersey for Game 5 on Thursday.

The Canes allowed two goals in the third, allowing the Devils to tie. But with a furious late push, the Hurricanes got the goal they need to cap a big night.

Babchuk 'bomb' has been missing

For all the talk about the Canes needing to get more production from their top lines against the Devils, what about Anton Babchuk?

The defenseman had a team-high four goals against the Devils in the four regular-season games. All came on power plays, and his hard, heavy shot got the attention of Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur.

But in three playoff games, Babchuk has just two shots on goal and has not scored.

"He hasn't been on the (power-play) first unit," Brodeur said today. "He has been on the second unit, so that's a little different from when we played them in the regular season."

Canes would like taste of the lead

If there has been a steady trend in the Canes-Devils playoff series, it has been that the Devils have never had to play from behind. Not once.

The Devils have scored first all three games. And while the Canes did win 20 games during the regular season after falling behind 1-0, it can be wearing, especially against a team like New Jersey.

"As far as I know we haven't had a lead yet in regulation," Canes goaltender Cam Ward said today after the morning skate. "It would nice to be able to score that first goal."

Area DirecTV viewers missed the end

Several N&O readers have complained that their DirecTV feed of Sunday’s game blacked out during the overtime period, only to reconnect after New Jersey had scored the winning goal.

A phone call to DirecTV’s public relations department was not returned. UPDATE: DirecTV spokesman Robert Mercer said he would check into the lost feed with the satellite company's technical operations department.

UPDATE 2: Mercer confirmed the outage, but said he was still investigating the cause. He apologized on behalf of DirecTV to those who missed the end.
