Runners have plenty of race choices this weekend

The sound of the first footsteps on the course will be heard about 6 a.m. Saturday on a big day of running in the Triangle.

The early start on an April morning comes because the runners have a long way to go in the Umstead 100-Mile Endurance Run at Umstead Park. The field is full, but you can always cheer on the competitors.

Women's record falls at St. Timothy's School Spring Sprint

Lorraine Young set the women's course record and Dave Max took top
honors in the St. Timothy's School Spring Sprint held April 17 in
Raleigh.

Max, 34, of Goldsboro, ran the certified North Raleigh course in 17:18
for the overall title in a record field of more than 1,000 runners and
walkers who turned out for the Duke Comprehensive Care Center benefit,
timing company official Jim Young reported.

Lorraine Young, 36, of Raleigh ran 19:39, breaking the previous women's mark by 24 seconds.
