Lutz impressed with Self, Jayhawks

ST. LOUIS — Bill Self has won an average of 29 games a year in eight seasons at Kansas with the 2008 national title and five Big 12 titles to his credit. Still, N.C. State assistant coach Bobby Lutz, who spent last season in the Big 12, considers this season to be Self's best work.

"When you consider what they lost and how they've progressed, I think it's his best coaching job ever," Lutz said.

The Jayhawks (29-6) had to replace three NBA draft picks from last season's team, which won 35 games before bowing out to Virginia Commonwealth in the Final Eight.

Duke misses Irving but easily handles Billikens

DURHAM – Even in a 37-point win, it was clear that top-ranked Duke misses injured point guard Kyrie Irving.

Thanks to an outstanding defense that forced 22 turnovers, the Blue Devils easily defeated Saint Louis this afternoon, 84-47, at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

But Duke (10-0) still is trying to figure out how to play on offense as Irving missed his second straight game with an injured big toe on his right foot.

Gooey Butter Cake is a summer indulgence

One of the best things about my family's annual return to St. Louis, my hometown, is the food. In between family visits and trips to the pool, I consume as many of my childhood favorites as I possibly can.

In honor of my annual Midwestern overindulgence, I share a favorite treat -- Gooey Butter Cake. The dessert is so rich, buttery and gooey, I usually make it only for picnics or church suppers.

Although Gooey Butter Cake has been a St. Louis favorite since the 1930s, I recently found the same recipe from Paula Deen. There must be a Midwestern connection.
