Find Fido with your Blackberry...

The locally produced Spotlight GPS dog tracker is now available for BlackBerry users.

SpotLight is a small box that attaches to a dog's collar and can give you its current location. It also can send you alerts via text if your dog strays from a specified area and turn-by-turn directions to your dog if you have a Web-enabled phone. And now there's a free BlackBerry app if that's your mobile device of choice.

A product from Raleigh-based Positioning Animals Worldwide (PAW), SpotLight has been on the market for a little more than a year. Even though the BlackBerry app is free, the device itself will still cost you $250 plus a monthly service plan charge like a cell phone plan.

Find Fido with your iPhone

The folks who make the Spotlight GPS pet locator are launching their own iPhone app today.

Spotlight is a device that was introduced last year by Raleigh company Positioning Animals Worldwide (that would be PAW for those of you who like acronyms...)

The device is the size of a business card and attaches to your pet's collar. It uses satellites and GPS technology to give you a GPS location for it at any time. You can set up safe zones like your yard or driveway and set the device to send you an alert if Fido strays beyond the boundaries you've established. Or, if your pet gets lost, Spotlight can give you an accurate location with turn-by-turn directions if you have a smart phone.

The unit costs $249.99 and there's a monthly service fee like a cell phone plan. Now you can add the iPhone app to the lineup for even more minute-by-minute pet tracking capabilities. The app is free, and you can get it here.
