Previewing tonight's area first round prep football games

Here's what's on the schedule in the Garner and Johnston County area and a few things to look for before you head out to the game tonight...

4-AA East

(7) Broughton (6-5) at (2) Garner (9-2)

These two teams met in the second week of the regular-season with Broughton eeking out a 21-20 win but oh how things have changed since then. The Trojans have won nine straight and are sure to give standout receiver Justin Burris (who scored three touchdowns all covering 75 yards or more in the first meeting) plenty of attention on Friday night.

What to Watch For? Just how do the Trojans defend or negate Burris' impact? Is it double-coverage or just a good old fashioned big pass rush that makes it tough for Broughton to get off a pass to anybody? You'll see a mix of both, more than likely.

4-A East

(5) Wilmington Hoggard (4-7) at (4) Clayton (6-5)

Both teams are coming off of big victories. Hoggard upset rival New Hanover on Friday night to earn a top-three finish in the conference and a playoff spot, while Clayton wrapped up its first winning season since 2005 with a thumping of old time rival Smithfield-Selma. The Comets will look to keep their multi-faceted ball-control attack rolling come Friday night.

Prep Football: What they're playing for on Friday night

Entering the last night of the high school football regular-season, here's a rundown of what the teams in The Smithfield Herald and Garner-Clayton Record readership areas are playing for...

Greater Neuse River

Garner 6-0; 8-2

Clinched No. 1 seed, share of conference title… Playing for seeding, possibly as high as No. 2, maybe 1 with an upset or two.

Southeast Raleigh 5-1; 7-3

Clinched No. 2 seed, can get a share of the title with a win and Garner loss… Playing for playoff seeding, a win probably means the Bulldogs will be at home for two weeks in the playoffs.

ADM Numbers out: Garner locked into 4-AA bracket

Based on the ADM numbers the NCHSAA released on Friday, here's where our teams in the Garner-Clayton Record and Smithfield Herald readership areas, who are eligible for the playoffs, are likely to line up come playoff time.

4-AA or 4-A

Clayton and West Johnston (both are slightly closer to the bottom 49th and 51st smallest 4-A schools, but still a possibility to end up in the 4-AA bracket)

Southeast Raleigh (mathematically, the Bulldogs could go 4-AA but they're close enough to the bottom 32 4-A schools in size that they'll probably be back in the smaller bracket once again)

3-AA or 3-A

South Johnston (The Trojans are right in the middle and could go either way, 3-AA or 3-A, depending on who else makes the playoffs.)

North Johnston

Southeast Raleigh 43, Harnett Central 6

ANGIER -- Southeast Raleigh wrapped up the No. 2 playoff seed from the Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference with a dominating 43-6 victory at Harnett Central on Friday night.

The Bulldogs' C.J. Okwara tallied two second quarter touchdown runs to put Southeast up for good after Central thad taken a 6-0 lead in the first period on a 14-yard interception return by Jeremy Wells. The Bulldogs' reeled off the 43 unanswered points.
