Garner boys expect test from Southeast tonight

From today's Prep Notebook in the N&O by Tim Stevens:

Undefeated Garner, No. 1 in The News & Observer boys basketball rankings, expects a Greater Neuse River 4-A test tonight against rival Southeast Raleigh.

"The kids know each other and play together so much that it is always a tough game," Garner coach Eddie Gray said. "We know that it is going to be a physical challenge."

Gray said the key to his club's success has been balance. Donald Johnson leads the Trojans with 18.7 points per game, but four different players have led the team in scoring in various games. Gavin Wilson, a football standout who missed the first three games, is averaging 15.7 and Dominique Reed averages 11.8.

"But scoring averages don't mean a lot to these guys," Gray said. "We don't have a bunch of guys rushing to the scoreboard after the games to check on how many points they got. They know that we win with our defense."

Garner is scoring 76 points per game and allowing 56.

Southeast Raleigh's playoff game with New Bern moved to Saturday night

Southeast Raleigh's third round NCHSAA 4-A football playoff game at New Bern has been postponed until tomorrow (Saturday) at 6 p.m. because of wet field conditions and more rain in New Bern.

All other Triangle-area games are currently still on go for tonight.

Clay's 'Predictions' for tonight's Southeast Raleigh vs. New Bern game

I did pretty well (4-for-4) in my predictions for area prep football games last week. I'll give it a go again this week with the games involving Garner, Wake Forest-Rolesville, Southeast Raleigh and New Bern. Remember, my predictions aren't' the typical score or winner outcomes but these projections are what I think will have the most direct outcome of the two games.

4-A Playoffs

Southeast Raleigh (10-3) at New Bern (12-0)

Prediction No. 1: This is the easy one, folks. One of the two young starting quarterbacks — Southeast's David Washington (a junior) or New Bern's Josh Taylor — will have a huge game statistically. I'm talking like 250-300 yards from scrimmage kind of big. One will find two or three big holes to make big (30-plus-yard) plays for his team.

4-AA Playoffs
Garner (11-2) at Wake Forest-Rolesville (12-1)

Prediction No. 1: Garner sophomore quarterback Lemond Johnson entered the season as a threat opposing coaches spent as much time thinking about how to stop as they did A.J. Clanton and Juwan Moye. After all, Johnson made several plays last season that won games for the Trojans.
