Film accuses Koch brothers of resegregating Wake County schools

A new video from a liberal group is accusing the conservative Koch brothers of having bought the Wake County school board elections in 2009 in an attempt to resegregate the school system.

The 11-minute video, released today by Brave New Films founded by Robert Greenwald, is part of a series of films attacking the Koch brothers. For this film, a variety of local supporters of the old diversity policy go on to blame the Koch brothers for the 2009 election results and ignore the notion that there was any large grassroots support for the changes.

"In 2009, the Koch brothers tried the destroy the Wake County Public School system," says a blurb flashed on the screen.

Team needed for Highway 70 Pigskin Showdown scrimmage at Garner

The organizers of the Highway 70 Pigskin Showdown prep football scrimmage at Garner are looking for another team after South Johnston High School pulled out of the event.

Gov. Perdue to visit Southeast Raleigh High today

You'll be able to find Gov. Bev Perdue at Southeast Raleigh High School at 1 p.m. today.

"Gov. Bev Perdue today will visit Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School as she remains focused on protecting teachers in the classrooms," says the press release just sent from Perdue's Office.

The event takes place a day after the state House gave a tentative approval to a budget that cuts K-12 education funding by 8.8 percent. Perdue joined teachers at yesterday's rally against the state education cuts.

Wake's 2011 magnet and calendar-application results

The trend of more Wake County families getting into magnet schools since the end of the old diversity policy is continuing.

School officials say 4,720 out of 8,476 applicants, or 55.7 percent, were accepted into magnet schools for the 2011-12 school year. Last year, 4,450 out of 8,732 applicants were accepted, or 51 percent.

A small part of this year's increase can be attributed to the opening of the new Wake NC State STEM Early College. But that's only 56 kids.

Top 20 salaries in the Wake County school system

Who makes the most money in the Wake County school system?

That's one of the questions that the Charlotte Observe looked at as part of a Sunday article on six-figures salaries in Wake and Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. Wake had 99 employees making at least $100,000 with 60 of them being principals.

This compares to 103 Wake employees with six-figure salaries in 2010, 112 in 2009 and 99 in 2008.

New principals at Southeast Raleigh High and Renaissance Schools

The Wake County school board announced tonight they had replaced three principals who are part of a new program to help struggling schools and had also chosen a new leader for Southeast Raleigh High.

New principals were chosen for Barwell Road, Brentwood and Wilburn elementary schools while the principal of Creech Road Elementary was allowed to keep her job. They’re all part of the Renaissance Schools program, a new effort targeting additional resources at Wake’s four lowest-performing elementary schools.

The principals and teachers at the four Renaissance schools had to reapply if they wanted to keep their jobs, which comes with a hiring bonus and merit pay. Those who aren’t hired back or don’t want to stay are transferred to other schools.

Keys for Millbrook girls to advance to 4-A regional final

In today’s N&O, D. Clay Best wrote how both the Millbrook girls basketball team and Southeast Raleigh have improved for the better since their lone meeting back in the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational in December, a 32-23 victory for Millbrook.

There’s a lot to be said about both of these teams, who were dominant in the Cap Eight and Greater Neuse River conference. A lot of things have changed since then as the two teams will meet again later tonight in the 4-A Eastern girls basketball regional.

Then again, the keys for Millbrook (29-1) beat Southeast Raleigh (24-3) again and be just one game from the state championship are pretty similar to what worked in the Glaxo.

GET A LEAD EARLY

This might be the most important factor mentally for Millbrook, a team full of sophomores. Since defeating Southeast Raleigh in December, the Wildcats have led in almost every minute of every game. The last time Millbrook trailed in the fourth quarter was against Sanderson in the Cap Eight Tournament final, and that was just a one-point deficit. The Wildcats haven’t faced the pressure of coming from behind late in the playoffs. There’s no need to deal with that now, and a good first quarter could propel the Wildcats.

Regional basketball times, dates set

The East regionals start Tuesday with the 4-A girls and 3-A boys.

Southeast Raleigh, Millbrook, Northwood and Northern Durham girls begin play while Chapel Hill, Millbrook, Wakefield and Northwood boys start play.
