Carrboro soccer No. 1, CHHS No. 3

Carrboro's undefeated girls soccer team remains No. 1 in the latest statewide ratings of NCHSAA 2A schools by www.eurosportscoreboard.com. Chapel Hill High School has moved up to No. 3 in the 3A classification.

Carrboro (9-0-2), which was tied 2-2 Tuesday night at 4A East Chapel Hill, next plays Cedar Ridge on Monday.

Chapel Hill (10-2-0) has won four straight, but took off spring break and hasn't played since a 9-0 shutout March 28 of Northern Vance. The Tigers host Oxford Webb (8-3-0) tonight and travel to East Chapel Hill (6-4-3) on Thursday.

Carolina women to host national champs

Third-ranked North Carolina hosts top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Notre Dame in a women's soccer match at 7 p.m. Friday at Fetzer Field. It's one of the four matches slated for the 2011 Carolina Nike Classic, to be held Friday and Saturday at Fetzer.

The schedule of games is as follows:

Friday, August 26

5 p.m. -- Duke vs. Houston

7 p.m. - North Carolina vs. Notre Dame

Sunday, August 28

1 p.m. - Duke vs. Notre Dame

3 p.m. - North Carolina vs. Houston

North Carolina will be seeking only its second victory ever over the Fighting Irish at Fetzer Field. Although the Tar Heels are 12-5-2 all-time against the Fighting Irish UNC is only 1-4 in games played at Fetzer Field. The only win came in 1998 by a 5-1 score.

Tickets are now on sale at the Ticket Center at TarHeelBlue.com. Fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets in advance to avoid potentially long lines Friday.

Hurricane Irene blows away Carrboro match

Among the casualties of Hurricane Irene even before it hits North Carolina will be The Brittany Soccer Showcase. That means Carrboro's boys soccer match with a talented Swansboro team, originally scheduled for Friday night in Wilson, is cancelled.

Most Triangle high school football teams are still scheduled to play Friday night, but many of those playing farther east or south are opting to play Thursday night or postponing for a later date to avoid the heavy rainfall expected along the I-95 corridor over the weekend.

For example, Durham Hillside at Fayetteville E.E. Smith has been moved to Thursday.

The Brittany for the Boys soccer showcase in Wilson, which was scheduled for Friday and Saturday, was also canceled. It's traditionally been a major draw for prep soccer, bringing in scores of teams every year.

Mike Petty, a spokesman for The Brittany organizing committee, said the decision to cancel was made so that traveling teams would be able to change their motel reservations, chartered buses and dining plans.

“To allow them to make their cancellations in time to avoid charges, it is necessary to make our ‘go, no go’ decision now rather than waiting for later weather updates and the right decision is to cancel,” Petty told the News & Observer. “If we err, we choose to err on the side of caution.”

The Chapel Hill News and the News & Observer's Preps Now blog will update you on changes to high school schedules as they are received.

Tigers, 'Cats will meet early

Chapel Hill and East Chapel Hill will stage an earlier than usual version of their intense soccer rivalry Thursday night in the finals of The O.C. invitational tournament.

The cross-town rivals will play at 8 p.m. Thursday on the campus of Carrboro High School in The O.C.'s championship game. That match will be preceded by Carrboro hosting Jordan-Matthews in the third-place consolation final at 6 p.m.

Over at Culbreth Middle School, Cedar Ridge will play Cary Academy at 5 p.m. Thursday, and Northwood will face Western Alamance at 7 p.m.

The O.C. junior varsity championship will be played tonight at 6 p.m. at Culbreth, featuring Carrboro against Chapel Hill.

In Tuesday's championship semifinals for the varsities, Chapel Hill fought off the talented and still under-rated visitors from Jordan-Matthews for a 4-3 win, and East Chapel Hill advanced to the title game after winning a penalty kick shootout with Carrboro.

The Wildcats and Jaguars were tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime, and then were still tied through one round of penalty kicks before East won the shootout in sudden death, 7-6.

Former RailHawk Amir Lowery talks about his return to Carolina with Impact

Amir Lowery made his return to WakeMed Stadium on Saturday night with Montreal Impact after spending the last two seasons with the Carolina RailHawks.

With the RailHawks going through changes in the offseason with their roster, Lowery, a midfielder, was one of the players who decided to make the move to play in Montreal, a team that will play next season in the MLS.

Lowery knew the questions about his move were going to come to after the RailHawks 2-1 win.

“I’m just trying to take a step forward in my career,” Lowery said. “The Montreal opportunity came about pretty late, but it’s just one of those things where they are going to the MLS and not that the RailHawks are any less of a team, it’s just a step I wanted to take.”

This was the first time Lowery had played against the RailHawks and he said he did get emotional in playing in Cary again.

“Everything hit me when we started to pull into the park,” he said. “It brought back a lot of memories, and it’s a special place for me.”
