Four football players lead way for Fuquay signees

Fuquay-Varina will have five athletes signing scholarships this week, including four football players that will sign today. None is more heralded than defensive tackle Shawn Underwood, a two-time all-state player who will play for Butch Davis at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Vandermaas-Peeler heads Athens' list

Athens Drive will have at least four players signing this fall with their college of choice. Three of them, Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler, Tyler Draovitch and Andrew Joyce, played on the 4-A East semifinalist boys soccer team. Vandermaas-Peeler, heading to UNC-Chapel Hill was a member of the U18 men's national team that competed in Israel in December, even scoring a goal.

Cary has five to sign

Cary will have at least five of its student-athletes signing today, including two-time state champion wrestler Ben Creed and conference champion swimmer Victoria Mitchell.

Hite, Carew Middle Creek's only spring signees so far

Harris Hite (above, #73) is one of two Middle Creek athletes who will sign their letter to play in college next year — something that could change in the coming weeks. Hite, a left tackle for the the football team, will be heading to Campbell. 

Green Hope to have 7 sign

Green Hope High had three athletes sign in the fall, and will have at least seven more sign today for the first day of the spring signing period. The Falcons have four different sports represented in their class, including one early graduate in Chase Keesling, who is already enrolled at Duke.

Panther Creek has 10 sign letters

Ten Panther Creek seniors in five different sports will sign their letters-of-intent this afternoon, easily the largest number in the school's short five-year history. The Catamounts had just one fall signee (Joe Morrison, wrestling — Appalachian State).

No signees today for Cary Academy, Holly Springs

No athletes from Cary Academy or Holly Springs High are ready to sign their letter-of-intent today — mainly because a number of them already have. Both schools were among the area leaders in fall signings.

Apex's signees

Apex is expecting at least five athletes to sign during today's first day of the spring signing period. Two are from the girls soccer team, while one more is on the boys soccer team. The other two represent the swimming and boys lacrosse programs.

Browning signs with Gardner-Webb

Raleigh Broughton High quarterback Chandler Browning signed with Gardner-Webb on Wednesday.

Browning (6-foot-3, 235 pounds) completed 143 of 259 passes for 1,705
yards during the 2008 season. He threw 15 touchdown passes and had six
passes intercepted.
