Local "American Idol" fans can't get enough of Garner native and AI finalist Scotty McCreery. But now local businesses are rushing to show their support.

This week, The Cupcake Shoppe on Glenwood South in downtown Raleigh introduced a "Scotty" cupcake, a butterscotch chip cupcake with butterscotch buttercream frosting. The cupcakes will be available in the shop through Saturday and sell for $3 each or $33 per dozen.

"All the staff here is obsessed with American Idol, and there are several country music fans as well," said shop owner Sara Coleman. "We decided to do a butterscotch Scotty cupcake."

Forgive the "cupcake lady" if she feels a tiny bit snubbed.

Last week during his visit to Raleigh, President Barack Obama was introduced by Sara Coleman, owner of the Cupcake Shoppe in Glenwood South.

On Tuesday, the day he turned 48, Obama gave legendary White House journalist Helen Thomas a plate of cupcakes -- they share the same birthday; she's 89.

Alas, they weren't Coleman's creations.

"I would love to say that they were, but they're not," Coleman said by telephone.
