Wake County announces 2011 Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Stephanie Rhodes for being named Wake County's 2011 Teacher of the Year this evening.

Rhodes has been a social studies teacher for 10 years, all at Sanderson High School in Raleigh. She teaches Civics and Economics and Honors Sociology. She is also the student council advisor, varsity volleyball coach, a member of the Student Support Team and Coalition for the Homeless club sponsor.

“The longer I teach, the more I realize that students do not buy into the academic curriculum; they buy into the relationship with the teacher and how she teaches the curriculum,” said Rhodes in a press release. “I believe small things outside the classroom - such as taking the time to listen, recognizing student success, or talking about a student’s interests - helps build a rapport so I can address academic needs in the classroom."

Sanderson announces first Hall of Fame class

Sanderson High School and the Sanderson Athletic Club are set to induct the first class of the newly established Sanderson Athletics Hall of Fame.  The Sanderson Class of 2011 will be the forty-third class of students to graduate from the school that opened for the 1968-69 school year.  Although the Spartans have a rich tradition of excellence in athletics, they haven’t established a Hall of Fame until now.

The Sanderson Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2011 includes eight athletes, one coach, one team, one booster, two families, and one “happening” - the famous “Streak” of 103 consecutive soccer matches without a loss.

Top 20 salaries in the Wake County school system

Who makes the most money in the Wake County school system?

That's one of the questions that the Charlotte Observe looked at as part of a Sunday article on six-figures salaries in Wake and Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. Wake had 99 employees making at least $100,000 with 60 of them being principals.

This compares to 103 Wake employees with six-figure salaries in 2010, 112 in 2009 and 99 in 2008.

Sanderson's Brunson has Wake County record

Sanderson junior Kim Brunson is having a record-setting season.

Through 13 games, she has 10 home runs, which puts her in elite company.

Sanderson finds its offense in 2-0 win over Millbrook

RALEIGH There was no denying Anna Dulaney’s impact on Sanderson’s 2-0 win over Millbrook on Wednesday night. It was written all over her walk.

After struggling to score goals the last two weeks, Sanderson (4-3-1, 4-3-0 Cap Eight 4-A) needed more out of its offense against Millbrook (4-4-0, 3-3-0). It needed to more opportunities. It needed someone to scrap. That’s what Dulaney did.

She put herself in the middle of the action against Millbrook, forcing the defense to match her intensity. Sometimes it resulted in offense for herself – taking a Savannah Parrish pass and putting it in the upper-left corner in the 54th minute – and other times it set up her teammates as she drew a foul in the penalty box Olivia Costello’s penalty kick in the 70th minute.

Former principal Richard Murphy dies

I've got some sad news to pass along about the death Saturday of former longtime Wake County high school principal Richard Murphy.

Murphy, 62, who had cancer, was a Wake high school principal for 21 years, including a year at East Wake High and nine years at Sanderson High. But he's perhaps best known for having been the first principal of Leesville Road High School, which opened in 1993.

Murphy left Leesville in 2004 to become senior director of high school programs.

Potts pushes Sanderson to soccer win over Enloe

Officially, Holly Potts finished Sanderson’s 4-1 win over Enloe on Monday night with no goals and no assists. Spartans coach Todd Worley knows that stats don’t mean everything.

With Sanderson leading 2-1 early in the second half, Potts took a free kick from 25 yards and sent a bullet into the high-right corner. But Enloe goalkeeper Hunter Kenny dove for the shot, knocking it down to Sanderson midfielder Ryan Davis who tapped in the rebound for the goal.

Davis was credited for the score – her first of two goals on the night – but Worley knows the Spartans don’t get on the scoreboard without Potts’ perfectly placed ball.

“We’ve been struggling on set pieces. So I just told her to rip it and she did,” Worley said. “It was a nice little angle and we had someone to follow it up with Ryan.”
