One of the beauties of high school cross country is when a national favorite shows up and shatters a course record, others in the field can still compete against the clock and walk away thrilled with a personal record.
Millbrook junior Samantha George did just that in the Race of Champions division of the nationally prestigious Great American Cross Country Festival Saturday at the WakeMed Soccer Park.
George placed eighth overall with a personal best of 17 minutes, 53 seconds in a 5,000-meter race won by Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall, N.Y., by an astounding 53-second margin.
