New principal named to Wake Early College of Health and Sciences

The Wake County school board appointed one permanent and five interim principals this evening.

Lisa Whitaker was named principal of Wake Early College of Health and Sciences in Raleigh with a salary of $85,659. She has been an assistant principal at Middle Creek High since 2008.

Gerald Pickett was hired to be interim principal of Enloe High in Raleigh with a salary equivalent to $127,496. He was principal of Fuquay-Varina from 2001 until he retired in 2005.

Susan Evans and Christine Kushner promote Wake NCAE endorsement

Wake County school board candidates Susan Evans and Christine Kushner have both released statements today trumpeting the endorsements they've received from Wake NCAE.

In Evans' press release, she says she's "proud to have earned the endorsement of the Wake NCAE, a group that truly has the best interests of students and teachers at heart." The group represents nearly 5,000 Wake school employees.

In Evans' press release, Wake NCAE Vice President Larry Nilles also takes a shot at the school board majority to explain the endorsement.

Del Burns donates to Kevin Hill's school board re-election campaign

Former Superintendent Del Burns is among the contributors in Wake County school board member Kevin Hill's latest campaign finance report.

Hill's new report, filed today, shows that had raised $9,395 as of June 30. New donations include $100 from Burns and several other small-scale donations from other retired Wake educators such as Walt Sherlin, Steve Takacs and Roy Teel/.

Hill, a former principal, worked with those educators before he retired from Wake.

Reviewing Broughton's magnet program

Will the school board pull the plug on Broughton High School's magnet program today?

As noted in today's article, Broughton will get some scrutiny when the board reviews the magnet middle and high schools. On the district's magnet reviews, Broughton has a low ranking when it comes to accomplishing the magnet goals of reducing high concentrations of poverty and promoting student diversity.

But options other than demagnetization are also expected to be discussed.
